Ross Barkley has his heart set on Tottenham

Tottenham have proven to be the top club in providing players a direct route to the England squad. That’s why Ross Barkley is so determined to join up with Mauricio Pochettino in North London.

Reports from England claim the Everton midfielder is “desperate” to secure a move to Spurs. In truth, he might have secured his dream move this summer if not for an ill-timed injury that knocked him out of commission. The classy midfielder has yet to make his season debut for the Toffees.

His lack of match time hasn’t dampened Tottenham’s interest in signing him. The only real question is whether or not Daniel Levy will move for him in January or be content to see if he becomes available in the summer on a free transfer. Hoping for the latter might open the door for another Premier League rival to swoop in and steal Barkley away.

It’s very possible that Barkley might scupper any move that doesn’t land him at Pochettino’s door step. He’s made it clear that securing his spot in the England team prior to the upcoming World Cup will be a significant factor in his decision-making. That fact gives Spurs a massive advantage in terms of his recruitment.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

After all, no Premier League manager has proven himself more adept at sending players into Gareth Southgate’s squad than Pochettino. This week’s call up of Harry Winks only adds to the cadre of players Poch has given The Three Lions. Winks was able to force his way into Southgate’s thinking despite only making four Premier League starts in his career.

When he’s fit and firing, Barkley can provide any squad a significant driving force from the middle of the pitch. There is some question as to what position he might play for Spurs though. Some fans see him as an attacking midfielder, but it seems more likely his future lies sitting deeper in the midfield. Barkley may well prove to be Mousa Dembele’s successor in the middle of the park for Tottenham.

No matter what, Everton fans who want to see Ross Barkley suit up for their squad need to hope he gets fit in a hurry. The talented midfielder has his heart set on a move to Tottenham which could happen as soon as January.
