There’s no place at Tottenham for Vincent Janssen

Vincent Janssen arrived at Tottenham with massive expectations. Unfortunately for the Dutch striker, he never experienced even mild success with Spurs. His loan experience at Fenerbahce isn’t going to be enough to earn him a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad either.

Janssen recently revealed that Tottenham threatened to banish him to train with the reserves after he refused a Deadline Day move to West Brom. Fortunately for the embattled striker, he did manage to escape to Fenerbahce on loan. Remember, Spurs had an extra week to arrange his departure to Turkey due their league’s extended transfer deadline.

That revelation alone should make it clear he isn’t coming back to North London. Pochettino is a patient manager, but once he decides you’re surplus to requirements, your time at the club is over. Clearly that’s the conclusion he reached about Janssen last summer.

It’s not as if Tottenham stood pat at the striker position either. Just as Janssen was jettisoned, Fernando Llorente was purchased to provide cover for Harry Kane. The Spaniard hasn’t made his presence felt in Pochettino’s squad yet either, but he has a long history of success against elite competition. He will get quite a bit more time to prove his worth to the club.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Add all of that up, and it’s very clear that Janssen will need to find a new club next season. It’s certainly possible that he can force his way into Fenerbahce’s long-term plans. Don’t rule out the possibility of Tottenham and the Turkish club working on a permanent move once his loan is complete. Of course, there’s no guarantee that he’ll play well enough on loan to bring Fenerbahce to the negotiating table with a serious bid.

Even though he has no future with Spurs, the club won’t give him away cheaply. Despite his struggles in the Premier League, West Brom were ready to shell out £27 million for his services. Another year away from the squad might lower that price a little, but it will still take more than £20 million to get a deal done.

Vincent Janssen is a hard-working player who has the talent to lead some club’s attacking corps. Unfortunately for everyone involved, that’s not going to happen for him at Tottenham. His days playing for Spurs are over.
