Tottenham have their eye on Cenk Tosun
If Tottenham fans had any doubt over whether or not Vincent Janssen was going to return to Spurs, this transfer story should clear the situation up. Spurs are already targeting a replacement for the Dutch striker in the form of Turkish hitman Cenk Tosun.
Reports from Turkey claim that Tottenham and Newcastle are both expressing significant interest in the 26-year-old striker. Besiktas certainly don’t want to let him go, but they’ll grudgingly do so if they receive a bid in excess of £20 million pounds or so.
Spurs have reportedly dispatched scouts to see Tosun in person on three occasions. That makes it quite obvious that their interest in the Turkish star is more than a passing dalliance. Mauricio Pochettino is clearly trying to determine whether or not Tosun can provide valuable cover for Harry Kane in the long run.
Of course, the acquisition of Janssen from AZ Alkmaar was supposed to solve that issue for Spurs. Unfortunately, Holland’s starting striker never got things going in the Premier League. That’s precisely why he was exiled to Fenerbahce at the start of this campaign. Instead, Tottenham opted to purchase Fernando Llorente on Deadline Day to serve as the club’s second striker.

Llorente’s advanced age makes him a temporary solution at best. Spurs will need to find another striker to join their attacking corps sooner rather than later. Pochettino might get by with Kane and Llorente this season, but purchasing another number nine next summer is a necessity.
Purchasing Tosun would represent a nice compromise between Janssen and Llorente. He isn’t the proven veteran that Llorente is, but he has shown real quality in Champions League play for Besiktas. He’s provided one goal and one assist in two appearances in the prestigious competition this season. Tosun isn’t a player who will be awed by any occasion.
The downside is that, at 26 years of age, Tosun is largely the player he’s ultimately going to become. Pochettino can likely elevate his game some, but he’s not going to suddenly transform into a world-class star. Tottenham will be paying for a player at or near the top of his career arc.

No matter how you slice it, Spurs are clearly prioritizing signing a new striker within the next two transfer windows. That’s more dirt to pile on Vincent Janssen’s Tottenham grave.
