Jan Vertonghen-8

The left-footed Belgian was the standout among Pochettino’s three centre backs. He didn’t put a foot wrong defensively all match and was able to make several crucial challenges to neutralize the Liverpool attack.

Vertonghen was also oh so close to breaking his annoying goalless streak with the club. He fired a terrific effort at goal only to be denied by a late arriving Liverpool player. Fortunately for Spurs, Kane was there to fire home the rebound to put Tottenham up by an insurmountable three goal margin.

Davinson Sanchez-7

It was yet another steady performance for Tottenham’s most boring player. That isn’t a criticism though, instead it’s a healthy complement to how easy the talented defender can make the game look.

As usual, the Colombian kept things simple in this match. When he was the last man between Liverpool and Hugo Lloris, he calmly cleared the ball out of play. Sanchez is the antithesis of John Stones. He doesn’t care about style, he only cares about neutralizing the opposing attack.

Toby Alderweireld-7

Alderweireld had his hands full trying to support Kieran Trippier in his battle against Mohamed Salah down the right flank. That prevented him from contributing as much to the Spurs attack as normal, but it didn’t hurt the squad’s overall performance.

Salah got to Spurs for one terrific goal, but it came down the right flank. That wasn’t Alderweireld’s responsibility. He put in a solid shift against Liverpool’s cadre of attacking talent.
