Tim Sherwood thinks he knows Tottenham’s future

Quite a few fans and pundits believe that Danny Rose is destined to leave Tottenham this summer. Count former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood as one of those people.

The former Tottenham boss believes a swap deal between Spurs and United involving Rose and Luke Shaw is inevitable. In fact, he’s gone on record with his opinion that Mauricio Pochettino’s club should “get it over and done with.”

It’s an easy rumour/story to understand. Pochettino managed Shaw to great effect when the two were together at Southampton. The Argentine gaffer treated the English left back like a son during their time on the South Coast.

Things haven’t gone very well for Shaw after leaving Pochettino’s side. He arrived at Manchester United with massive expectations, but he finds himself on the fringes of Jose Mourinho’s squad. It’s easy to see why he’d be looking for a move away this summer.

Of course, it wasn’t that long ago when Pochettino treated Danny Rose like a son either. He put his faith in the English left back early in his tenure at Spurs. Pochettino handed him a new contract and turned him into England’s top left back.

That doesn’t tell the entire story between Rose and Pochettino though. Rose infuriated his manager with his openly critical comments of the club this summer. He may have had a point that several members of the squad deserve higher pay, but airing that issue in public was not the right course of action according to anyone at Tottenham; least of all Pochettino.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Swapping Rose for Shaw could certainly make sense for both Spurs and United. That doesn’t mean the move is inevitable though. Relations between the two Premier League clubs have been icy at best over the better part of a decade. Spurs haven’t sent a player to Old Trafford since Dmitar Berbatov.

What that really means is that Tottenham will drive a hard bargain if Mourinho and company do want to acquire Rose. No club know his full potential better than Spurs. They know he has the ability to be the Premier League’s best left back.

There’s significant risk in a swap deal for United as well. If they allow Shaw to move to Tottenham and he regains his top form, it will look very bad for Mourinho. Shaw could become a symbol of The Special One’s refusal to bring along young talent at Old Trafford. That’s always been one of Mourinho’s heaviest criticisms.

The ultimate conclusion here is that this swap deal is certainly possible, but it’s far from a certainty. There’s too much risk for both clubs to make it a done deal.
