Centre back-Jan Vertonghen

The Belgian has been a mainstay in Pochettino’s starting XI this season and this match won’t be any different. His steady defensive play is a huge key for Spurs’ excellent defensive corps.

Vertonghen will be expected to provide loads of support for his club’s starting left wingback no matter who gets the nod there. It’ll be defense first and offense for the talented left-footed defender.

Centre back-Davinson Sanchez

Barring injury, I can’t see how Sanchez won’t make it back into the starting XI for this match. There’s been no mention of such a malady from the club, but Sanchez has still missed out on the last two matches.

Real Madrid simply have too much offensive talent to leave Sanchez on the bench in this match. His rare combination of both speed and power give the Spurs’ defense a major boost. Look for him to get back on track versus Ronaldo and company.

Centre back-Toby Alderweireld

There might not be another member of Pochettino’s squad who relishes the challenge of playing against Real Madrid more than Alderweireld. He thrives on playing against world-class opponents and his time at Atletico gave him a sincere dislike for their crosstown rivals.

Like Vertonghen, Alderweireld will be counted on to sure up the defense before contributing to the attack. Even so, his ability to effectively distribute the ball from the back will be a big key in this match.
