Suso to Tottenham rumours just won’t die

Tottenham continue to scour the globe to find the perfect attacker to round out their attacking corps. One name that continues to come up is AC Milan attacker Suso. Rumours connecting the former Liverpool starlet with a return to England continue to pop up in England and Italy.

Italian sources allege that Suso’s struggling to adapt to his club’s new tactics this season. As such, both he and AC Milan are at least willing to listen to offers. It’s unclear whether or not the Serie A giants would be willing to accept a transfer bid below Suso’s reported £50 million release clause.

That question should go a long way towards determining Spurs interest. Mauricio Pochettino’s club lodged a significant summer bid for Suso, but it was only slightly above £20 million. It’s highly unlikely that Tottenham would be willing to double this summer’s bid to bring Suso to North London.

If AC Milan are willing to come down off the release clause, Spurs would likely have strong interest in the talented attacker. Georges-Kevin N’Koudou continues to struggle with life in the Premier League and Erik Lamela still hasn’t managed to return from his lengthy injury absence. That leaves Spurs dangerous short of attacking talent behind their starting corps of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

Suso could play a similar role for Spurs that Son Heung-Min currently occupies. The 23-year-old Spaniard can play as a central striker in a pinch, but is much better suited to play as a winger or second striker. He’s been particularly effective this season when he starts as a right-sided forward. Suso has managed three goals and three assists in just four starts in that spot this year.

Ultimately, Suso’s similarity to Son might be Spurs biggest reason to stay out of a protracted bidding war for his services. Neither player provides their club with the sort of defensive contribution that Pochettino normally requires. It remains to be seen whether or not Suso can add that to his game as his career progresses.

Tottenham will continue to evaluate a number of attacking targets over the next several months and Suso will likely stay on their short list. Look for him to stay with AC Milan unless they’re ready to offer him to Spurs for a transfer fee much closer to £25 million.
