Tottenham want to add one more attacker

It’s very obvious that Tottenham want to add one more goal scorer to their attacking corps this season. Predictably, Spurs are looking at a number of talented options. The latest name to add to Mauricio Pochettino’s shopping list is Mikel Oyarzabal.

Reports from Italy claim that Tottenham, Juventus and a host of other clubs are actively scouting the Real Sociedad winger. Given his impact on La Liga this season, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. The 20-year-old Spanish winger has already found the back of the net six times in his eight La Liga appearances.

He isn’t the finished article yet, but his ability to perform at a high level in Spain at his age bodes well for his future. His acquisition would provide Pochettino with another high-level starlet to bed into his first team. Like many of Tottenham’s current stars, Oyarzabal’s best future is likely a few seasons away.

Pochettino and company would likely struggle to convince him to come to England instead of joining Juventus. If all things are equal, The Old Lady seem to have more playing time to offer. The Spurs starting attack is pretty set with Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli holding down the three starting spots.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

It is possible that Pochettino wants to transition his side back into a 4-2-3-1. That likely wouldn’t be a full-time switch, but it’s a formation he struggles to field at the current point in time. Son Heung-Min can play as the third attacking midfielder, but Pochettino doesn’t seem to trust him to play on both ends of the pitch. That could be a struggle for Oyarzabal as well.

There are no questions about his offensive game though. He’s an electric attacker with a real eye for goal. Perhaps more importantly, he’d give Spurs the presence out wide they’ve been searching for since Pochettino’s arrival. Oyarzabal would be favoured to succeed where the likes of Clinton N’Jie and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou have failed.

The most likely truth is that Oyarzabal is a secondary option for Spurs. If Tottenham aren’t able to add an established Premier League talent like Wilfried Zaha or Ross Barkley this January, the club’s attention could turn to Spain. Signing Mikel Oyarzabal would be a terrific consolation prize for the Premier League giants.
