Tottenham want big money for Danny Rose

Manchester United have to feel encouraged at the news that Tottenham have named their asking price for left back Danny Rose. Now Jose Mourinho and company need to decide whether or not they are willing to meet the Spurs’ valuation.

Reports from England claim that Mauricio Pochettino’s squad are willing to sell Rose in January if another club stump £50 million. That may sound like an astronomical fee, but it certainly is a reasonable asking price for arguably England’s top left back.

Manchester United certainly have the financial reserves to purchase Rose, but they’ll have to  ask themselves whether or not he’s really worth the money. When he’s fit and firing, he’s the Premier League’s top left back. Unfortunately, he really hasn’t looked like quite the same player since returning from his prolonged injury absence.

United would be making a gamble that Rose will regain his former glory. His injury isn’t thought to be permanently debilitating, but you never know. Officials at Old Trafford also thought Luke Shaw would fully recover from his leg break. It certainly doesn’t appear that he’s returned to his former glory.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Ed Woodward always has the option to try to negotiate with Daniel Levy to drive the price down. Tottenham’s miserly transfer boss might be willing to knock a few million pounds off the price, but he isn’t going to slash his asking price to accommodate United. Levy knows he can draw other suitors into the bidding war if United put up too much resistance.

Ultimately, the news that Tottenham have named a price for Rose shows that Spurs are likely going to make a deal this January. It will be a blow for Pochettino to lose such a prodigious talent, but he only wants players fully committed to his project. Rose’s attention has clearly been elsewhere for the better part of a year.

The smart money’s on United ponying up the cash to secure Rose’s services late in the winter transfer window. Count on plenty of stories about twists and turns in transfer negotiations between Spurs and United before then, but there’s too much momentum behind this deal for it not to be completed.
