Kyle Walker-Peters should stay at Tottenham

Southampton are attempting to take Kyle Walker-Peters on loan, but Tottenham should keep their young right back just where he is. Walker-Peters would enjoy more playing time on the South Coast, but he’s ready to play a meaningful role for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

Reports from England claim the Saints want to bring Walker-Peters in to provide cover for Cedric Soares. It’s a logical potential move since Walker-Peters is currently the third choice right back for Spurs. That isn’t where he should be in Pochettino’s pecking order though.

The young Englishman is ready to ascend to the backup role behind Serge Aurier. I understand what Pochettino sees about Kieran Trippier, but the harsh reality is that he isn’t dynamic enough to help Tottenham achieve their lofty goals. Walker-Peters lacks Trippier’s experience, but that’s something that can be fixed in relatively short order.

Perhaps Tottenham would be better-served to offer Southampton Trippier instead. The former Burnley star has the type of game that would fit in well for a mid-table Premier League club. That isn’t to say Trippier is a bad player, it only points out that he isn’t good enough to thrive under Pochettino.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

The only thing missing from Walker-Peters’ development is the chance to play meaningful matches. He could do that at Southampton, but the stakes would be much higher for him at Spurs. Pressure creates diamonds. What Walker-Peters needs now is for Pochettino to throw him into the fire to see what he’s truly capable of.

I’m well aware that all of this is unlikely to happen. I actually believe that Walker-Peters will probably end up playing at Southampton for the rest of the season. To suddenly make him Aurier’s only backup would be a risky decision for Pochettino.

Then again, Tottenham have always been a club that pride themselves on taking risks. GIving Walker-Peters the chance to become a difference-maker this year could pay massive dividends for Spurs. He could prove capable of becoming the club’s next young, English international.
