The FA Cup will not change Tottenham’s status as a club

Tottenham fans have every right to be desperate for silverware. The club have undergone a considerable drought and winning this year’s FA Cup could quench the fan base’s desperate thirst. That does not, however, mean that manager Mauricio Pochettino is wrong to downgrade this season’s quest for a trophy.

Pochettino’s job as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is to elevate the club. When you think of it that’s quite a colossal task. Spurs are, after all, a big European club. Moving them up the prestigious ladder of football clubs is a bit like trying to move a mountain. It can be done, but it’s going to take significant, persistent effort.

Simply put, winning this year’s FA Cup would only be a small step in moving Tottenham forward. Don’t believe me? Just consider what winning the competition did for Wigan in 2013. They enjoyed a brilliant day at Wembley but found themselves in the Championship the following season. That’s not exactly the sort of future Tottenham fans want for their club.

It’s also important to note that Pochettino has made it quite clear that he wants to win the competition. Even without Harry Kane and Dele Alli he put out a strong squad at Swansea this past weekend. That, in and of itself, is proof that Pochettino wants to win. Anyone who knows anything about the Argentine gaffer understands he wants to win every fixture his club can compete in.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

All Pochettino has done is put the FA Cup in its proper context. Somehow, that’s managed to stir up quite a bit of unjustified ire within the Tottenham fan base. He’s even been forced to clarify his comments recently by telling the media that winning the competition would be great, but would not take the club to a “higher level.”

If you really think winning the FA Cup is going to drastically change Tottenham’s future as a club, then you’re fooling yourself. Yes, it might briefly stifle the narrative of high-profile players leaving to win silverware, but it would only be a temporary respite. Within six months the media would start the chatter anew. The only difference would be the subject change of simply winning trophies to challenging for a Premier League or Champions League title.

Tottenham fans should be pleased that our manager isn’t focused on just winning the FA Cup. That’s something Harry Redknapp might have dreamt about. Instead, Pochettino is determined to make Tottenham the biggest and best club in the world. Isn’t that the very essence of “To dare is to do?”
