England player ratings: Lingard on target in win over Netherlands
By Danny Hart
Raheem Sterling – 7.5
Sterling has played in almost every attacking position possible during his international career, and this time he was asked to play as one of two out-and-out strikers alongside Marcus Rashford.
The Manchester City forward worked tirelessly to chase down the Netherlands defenders, while his lightning-quick bursts forward were a particular highlight of England’s performance. He was substituted after 67 minutes, presumably with one eye on Tuesday’s game against Italy.
Marcus Rashford – 6
This just wasn’t Rashford’s night. The youngster’s best displays for England and Manchester United often come when he’s cutting inside from the left or right, and while the expectation is that he’ll be a central striker in the future, he struggled to really impact the game from the position in this match.
In fairness, he lacked support on the rare occasions that he found himself in a promising position in the final third. He also should have had a penalty after a foul from Matthijs de Ligt but the referee gave nothing.
