Tottenham’s top striker should be angry

Whether or not you believe Christian Eriksen’s cross into the box struck Tottenham striker Harry Kane before it landed in the back of the net is irrelevant. The storm of controversy surrounding Kane’s desire to have the goal counted as his truly ridiculous.

If Kane were less polite he’d tell everyone precisely where they can shove their comments. He clearly never expected such a controversy. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed as much with his comments to the media yesterday.

Perhaps that was a little bit naive. After all, Kane and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah are locked in a tense battle to win the Golden Boot. It’s logical that Salah and his fans are irritated that Kane scored such a soft goal.

It’s still ridiculous for Liverpool and other Premier League fans to carry on like this. Lambasting a striker for wanting to have a goal counted in his favour is honestly pretty moronic. Strikers are put out on the pitch to score goals. They are compensated handsomely when they do so at the prolific rate Kane does. He has every motivation to want the goal to be counted in his name.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

Part of what Kane such a good player is his singular desire to score goals. He isn’t the biggest or fastest striker in the Premier League. What makes him special is his intense work rate and top-notch finishing ability. He’s a player who is desperate to score goals every time he steps onto the pitch. In short, claiming the goal from Eriksen’s cross is precisely what a player like Kane should be doing.

Even if you happen to think it’s a bit silly for him to lobby the FA for the goal, what difference does it really make? I suppose if you’re a diehard Liverpool and/or Salah fan you have a reason to feel aggrieved. Even so, it’s not something that requires a litany of tweets and other social media posts.

Perhaps Liverpool fans should be more concerned with their Champions League progression. Or better yet, they should focus their energy on trying to finish ahead of Spurs in the final Premier League table. Liverpool have received a lot of positive press, but Tottenham have a very big chance of finishing ahead of them when the season is done.

It will never happen, but I wish Harry Kane would tell the world to shut up about whether or not he scored his latest goal against Stoke. The truth is it barely matters to anyone other than him.
