Premier League giants set to battle for English star’s signature
By Matt English
Many of the big clubs in the Premier League are lining up to sign a young Norwich City star
Norwich City are having a very good season in the EFL Championship, logging 56 points up to this point. They sadly will not be promoted to the Premier League, though, as they are 13 points away from a playoff spot with just three matches to play. With their season winding down, the club will likely need to prepare for the future without their best player.
Midfielder James Maddison is being targeted by many of the Premier League’s best clubs, and for good reason. The 21 year old has racked up some great numbers for Norwich, scoring 14 goals in league play and adding eight assists. His importance to the team is clear every time he steps on the field as he dictates play and creates chances throughout the match.
Since Norwich is not moving up, they could afford to lose a player like Maddison if it means getting a good chunk of change for him. This would allow them to not only fill in the gap left in Maddison’s wake, but also aid them in upgrading the team in other positions. Some of the money could be used to secure Angus Gunn on a permanent term from Manchester City, as he was vital to Norwich’s success this season.
The club could also look to make Moritz Leitner’s loan move a permanent deal as well. The German has been playing well for Norwich this season and could see vastly increased playtime if Maddison makes the jump to the Premier League. The only problem is that, although he is moving to the Premier League, Maddison will likely be loaned out during his first year or two at the club.

This could mean an immediate return to a Championship club, as he will likely get much more play time in a lower league. Top clubs like Manchester United, City, Chelsea and Tottenham could sign Maddison, but the likelihood of him being loaned out that same month are very high. This is usually the case, so it should not come as a shock to a player of his age.
The move to the Premier League may not be an immediate pay off in terms of experience, but getting sold to an elite club would definitely be a dream come true for Maddison.
Norwich will be losing an incredible maestro in the midfield, but the potential fee should make this loss a bit more palatable. The future looks bright for Maddison, so it is only a matter of time before the offers start rolling in.
