Defensive midfielder-Eric Dier

There was a long stretch of time this summer when it seemed like Dier would be playing for Manchester United this season. Instead, he’s in line to start for Tottenham against the Red Devils today.

Dier will relish the chance to compete against Paul Pogba in the middle of the pitch. In truth, he needs to be more concerned with some of United’s faster attackers. Dier must be good on the ball to keep the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku from hitting Spurs on the counter.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

If Dier keeps a cool head he can be an asset for Spurs in this match. The Englishman will need to play within himself to give his squad a chance to advance in the competition.

Defensive midfielder-Mousa Dembele

The talented Belgian may be on his way out of Tottenham this summer, but that doesn’t mean he can’t play a meaningful role in today’s match. Pochettino will trust Dembele to play one of the best matches of the season today.

For Dembele, it’s always a question of whether or not his body is prepared to compete. When he’s fit and firing he’s a monster in the midfield. When his body begins to betray him, he’s a turnstyle. His fitness level will play a huge role in determining the outcome of this match.
