Mauricio Pochettino has been a long-time candidate to replace Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.

Managing at Southampton and Tottenham, Mauricio Pochettino has picked up on a few essential lessons to management. Although he’s still somewhat inexperienced, it speaks volumes of his character to be linked with a Real Madrid opening.

That opening is more open than ever right now, as the Spanish side is without a manager. Zinedine Zidane announced his departure earlier in the week, which came as a shock to many.

Obviously, Mauricio Pochettino recently signed a new deal with Tottenham, which was probably signed too early. However, when Los Blancos come calling, it’s hard not to give into the temptation.

The Mirror have reported he is happy at Tottenham, but he will still listen to any offers Real Madrid make to acquire him.

"“When Real Madrid call you, you have to listen to them.” – Mauricio Pochettino"

This was an interesting choice of words from the Argentine boss. One would infer from his answer that he has been in contact with the Real Madrid board before, which wouldn’t come as a surprise as Zidane’s future has been on hinges for some time now.

Pochettino has shown immense improvement at Tottenham, as he’s made them into a consistent top four side. Although he has never lifted a trophy, he’s taken both Southampton and Tottenham up the pecking order during his time with the clubs.

Not only is he an astute tactician, but his man management is second to none. He injects belief into each and every player, which is particularly important when it comes to youth.

Real Madrid have youth prospects in abundance, and a number of players who are unhappy with Zidane’s management. Pochettino could come in and change all of that up, so it’s hard to dispute the Argentine being the best possible option for them.

The Mirror also report Real Madrid may need to pay a hefty price, which is only to be expected given his situation. Fans will hope it’s money well spent, and given his track record, I can’t think otherwise.

The likes of Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, and perhaps even Cristiano Ronaldo will benefit from the appointment of the Spurs man.

Pochettino was never given the opportunity to manage Bale, but the two could from quite the romance at Madrid. Bale and Zidane seem to have fallen out, but Bale’s brace against Liverpool in the Champions League final will have given him hope there’s a future at Real Madrid.
