Tottenham are linked with Jack Grealish, but Aston Villa’s asking price of the midfielder is ridiculous.
Tottenham have a real English core about them. They pride themselves on promoting home-grown players and seeing them on the international stage brings sentimentality to the club.
They may have lost some of this when they sold Kyle Walker, and with Danny Rose potentially being next, Mauricio Pochettino wants to restore his English core.
It’s an underrated thing to possess. English players are known for their grit and stiff upper lip, which Dele Alli has shown perhaps a bit too much in recent seasons.
That said, it’s no surprise to see Tottenham linked with yet another English gem. This time, it’s the midfielder Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.
According to the Telegraph, Tottenham may need to splash the cash should they wish to land Grealish. The Aston Villa board are holding firm for a £40m fee.
£40m for a player in the second tier of English football just goes to show the overruling power money has on the English game. It’s a ridiculous price to pay, and Tottenham must negotiate their way around this.
Daniel Levy isn’t known for being a big money-spender, and he feels like he can land the midfielder for £15m. Of course, he would come at much better value for money if this is the case.
Ageing at 22 years old, he has contributed to nine goals in the EFL Championship. Of those, six have been assists and three have been goals. While this isn’t exceptional, he may not need to bomb forward for Tottenham next season anyway.

Tottenham will potentially look to drop some midfielders a little deeper in order to protect the defense. With Toby Alderweireld likely to leave the club, his tenacity at the back will be missed.
Grealish would still look to bomb forward whenever he can, as that’s where his main traits are located. He loves having time on the ball to work his magic, and he’s been the real diamond in the rough for Villa this season.
Signing young English gems is always risky. I can’t remember the last time an English player lived up to the heights they were set as a youngster.
There will be a lot of media scrutiny, and although the media protect Spurs at all costs, if he steps one foot out of line then there will be the inevitable backlash. It’s just the way English football is.
