Croatia were able to defeat a poor Nigeria side in their World Cup opener. In contrast, Argentina tied against Iceland, giving them a lot of work to do to move onto the Round of 16.
Winning a World Cup opener gives a team hope and momentum going forward in the tournament. Croatia will utilize the advantage of winning their first match when they go up against Argentina.
In other words, Croatia can’t afford to sit back and defend. They have no reason to go for a draw against Argentina. They’re a solid side with depth in the midfield and potential to surprise their opponents.
Croatian coach, Zlatko Dalic had a lot to say leading up to Thursday’s clash.
"“We’re playing one of the best in the world, we have a great deal of respect for them but we also respect ourselves. It’s going to be a great challenge, but we have to believe in ourselves and show our true colors.”“We’re playing one of the best in the world, we have a great deal of respect for them but we also respect ourselves. It’s going to be a great challenge, but we have to believe in ourselves and show our true colors.”"
Dalic wants his players to be at their best going into the game. As much of a problem Messi will be, he isn’t the only star on the team. They have a team full of star players with necessary international experience.

The Croatians have to work as a unit to keep up with Aguero, Di Maria, Dybala, etc. Additionally, Argentina’s defense with Rojo and Otamendi is nothing to laugh about.
In terms of tactics, Croatia could have anything up their sleeve. Playing in a game with nothing to lose helps with their decisions. They would see the best results controlling the middle of the pitch.
Croatia should not sit back against Argentina. Sitting back will invite heavy pressure on the team, which will eventually lead to a lack in focus that concedes a goal. On the other hand, Croatia doesn’t have the quality up top to put on a full attacking display.
Even Rakitic confirms that they have no special formula to stop Messi.
"“Messi is one of the best players in the world and he’ll have his moments. It’s up to us to stop him but to play the right way and enjoy the match.”“Messi is one of the best players in the world and he’ll have his moments. It’s up to us to stop him but to play the right way and enjoy the match.”"
It would suit them best to hold the ball and try to find pockets of space like they did against Nigeria to get in behind Argentina’s defense. A key player for them will be Mandzukic, his presence in the box can get them a vital goal to grab the 3 points.
