The World Cup will experience a drastic change in 2022. The World Cup will transition from summer to winter that year.

Qatar are the hosts of the 2022 World Cup. Plenty of allegations already surrounding this World Cup. Treatment of workers and wages are the biggest problems heading into this tournament.

Furthermore, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, confirmed that the tournament will begin on November 21st. While the final will be held on December 18th.

The 2022 World Cup may also be the first to have 48 teams. They could a do a test run before 2026 in North America. For now it is 32, but could change to 16 groups of 3 instead of 8 groups of 4.

The change comes primarily from the high temperatures in Qatar. Average summers reach around 107 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Humidity coupled with high heat will cause exhaustion in players and sever injury.

Infantino confirms the effects of heat on the players during the press conference.

"“In the end it is the right decision. It cannot be played in June and July and in November and December the players are very well prepared because it is almost the beginning of the season.”“In the end it is the right decision. It cannot be played in June and July and in November and December the players are very well prepared because it is almost the beginning of the season.”"

How will this affect domestic leagues?

Unfortunately, the change of dates affects how leagues across the world will function. The leagues would have to stop play for a month, leading to an extended season going into the summer months. Many leagues will have to consider starting earlier to make room for the change.

Another problem is the injuries players could face. The games fatigue players, especially in later rounds where they can play up to 120 minutes. If players can’t return to full fitness, clubs will be in trouble.

Viewership will be affected by the winter schedule. In countries like the USA, sports like basketball, NFL, etc. dominate television viewership. These sports being in off-season in the summer allows for further exposure in the country. It generally gives people a sport to watch, if not anything.

Also, the change will impact attendance in the stadiums. World Cup tickets are not cheap or affordable for many. People save money for presents on Christmas, Hanukkah, and many other festivities.

Choosing to buy both room and board to attend the tournament can affect the ability to properly enjoy the holidays.

Overall, the change comes with benefits and downsides. Football is adapting every year, and this World Cup can revolutionize those that come after it.
