Left Back: Alex Sandro

Alex Sandro was one of the bright spots in Juve’s first match. He was solid at the back, making 2 tackles, an interception, and a clearance. However, it was his attacking contributions that really made him stand out in the season opener. He made 3 key passes in the game, completed 88% of his passes in the game, and most importantly provided the assist on the game winning goal.

This job remains his to lose. His performance in the opener certainly won’t change that fact. His performance last weekend earned him a spot in the Serie A team of the week and he will need to stay at that level for Juventus against Lazio.

Right Back: Joao Cancelo

Joao Cancelo certainly won’t want to remember his Juventus debut. He was flat out disappointing against Chievo. Both Chievo goals were created on his side of the defense. For the first Emanuele Giaccherini was given miles of space to send in a cross. Cancelo was directly responsible for the second, committing a needless foul just inside the penalty box.

In spite of this poor performance, Juve will need to stick with him for the home opener. He was brought in to take over the starting role. If we don’t see Cancelo return to the form we saw him in at Inter last year it might not be long before Juve gives Mattia De Sciglio get a shot at the job. For now though, we can expect to see Cancelo get another chance to impress in a big game.
