Danny Welbeck deserves to start for England against Switzerland
By Kian Long
England come up against Switzerland tomorrow night, and following their disappointment to Spain, the Three Lions need to make several changes.
England performed quite well against Spain, don’t get me wrong. Their attacking mindset was impressive, as they weren’t afraid to push forward and challenge David de Gea. There were certainly a lot of positives to take, but Gareth Southgate mustn’t get complacent in that regard.
According to The Mirror, the Three Lions boss will make several changes, in a bid to save them from embarrassment. England are in bad form right now, losing their last three games. If they are to lose against Switzerland, then questions marks need to be raised over the team.

This shouldn’t be the case. The country gave their followers plenty of hope in the World Cup, as they reached the semi-final. However, the optimism from Russia is slowly beginning to fade away, and it will soon go back to ‘same old England.’
It’s not too late to get on a winning streak, though. England will face a hard time against the rampant Switzerland, but they certainly have what it takes to beat them. One man deserves the start like no other.
Danny Welbeck is the last in the current pecking order, but it doesn’t indicate how much he can bring to a side. His goal scoring input can be questionable, but when the pressure is on him to score, he usually does – he’s weird like that.
Many England fans will feel like he was unfairly denied a late goal against Spain. David de Gea fumbled, leaving the striker with an open goal in which he prodded home. The referee gave a more lenient view to the goalkeeper though, obviously.
Welbeck is like this, he likes to make the most of scraps. Although the Switzerland defense is well-managed, they have it in them to come up with the odd spill. If they do, then Welbeck is able to pounce on them. Should Kieran Trippier start, then Welbeck will also be able to make himself a threat in the air, as we’ve seen often throughout his career.
His goal scoring record for England is pretty good. Being only the second top scorer in the current squad, the Three Lions know all about his goal scoring prowess. The Arsenal forward has scored 16 goals in 41 international appearances.
Do you think Danny Welbeck will earn his start against Switzerland, or will it be another tale from the bench?
