Defensive Midfielder- Casemiro- 8/10

When the full backs or Sergio Ramos were attacking, Casemiro formed a three man pairing with Raphael Varane and another available partner to keep the defence safe and secure from being breached. The 26 year old dealt well with the danger posed by the formidable Danielle De Rossi and also made a few necessary interceptions from well worked passes by Roma. His tackling, duelling and intercepting skills were essential for Real Madrid to keep a good share of possession.

Right Midfielder- Luka Modric- 8.5/10

Luka Modric put in another prime display and ran the Real Madrid engine smoothly against a determined Roma side that was eventually tamed. The battle on Wednesday was won in the midfield and Modric’s presence was of paramount importance as this happened. The Croatian completed 93% of his attempted passes, which included a sublime assist to Gareth Bale who scored Real Madrid’s second goal of the night. Modric was taken off for Dani Ceballos in the last five minutes of the match and got a deserved rest. That was probably the last of his that we saw this week because he might be completely rested for the visit of Espanyol.

Left Midfielder- Toni Kroos- 8/10

Casemiro’s inclusion in the starting eleven meant that Toni Kroos was unleashed in a much free and attacking role than during Madrid’s away visits to Girona and Bilbao in La Liga. The German completed 95% of his passes and took 4 shots, only one of which found the target and was brilliantly diverted away by Robin Olsen. He also provided beautiful long passes, out of which one was for Gareth Bale and that looked sensational.
