3. Xhaka got it all right

When thinking about defensively-able midfielders, Xhaka was probably the last person that sprung to mind last season. Defensively, he was all over the place under Arsene Wenger. That has all changed though.

Against Huddersfield, he made his return from the one-match ban he picked up against Tottenham. His input was clearly missed in the United match and his importance shone through yesterday. He was the more defensive-minded midfielder of all the three and it paid off.

When Huddersfield surged forward, it was often Xhaka that stepped in to prevent any chances of counter-attacks. This was particularly important towards the end of the match when Arsenal looked to retain their lead. The midfield duel between Xhaka and Aaron Mooy was also an interesting one to watch. In short, Xhaka had his number throughout but it was still hotly contested.

It just goes to show how much he has developed under Unai Emery. There was a short period of time in which he was asked to play at left-back which surely helped him on a defensive front. Also, I find that Xhaka tends to defend better now that there is no onus on him to do so, I guess that’s just the way life works.

He is still the dictator of play and Torreira is still the menace in midfield, don’t be fooled. However, it was refreshing to see that Unai Emery has a backup plan to use in midfield should he need it. Life is all about balance, that’s always been the case at Arsenal.
