The Premier League is bouncing back and it’s amazing to see…
Who remembers the days where Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal would consistently be battling in the Champions League? Well, times have changed since then. La Liga’s dominance of both the European competitions shone through, brushing the original Premier League big four to one side.
However, the English teams seem to be making a comeback and it’s a process which has been ongoing for a few seasons now. It was first signified when Manchester United lifted the Europa League under Jose Mourinho a few seasons ago, then again last season when Liverpool reached the Champions League final. Obviously, these two were not out of their depths but given the large break they faced, it did seem that way.

Things are different nowadays. Manchester City has joined the fray, along with Tottenham solidifying themselves a place among the now big six. Times are exciting for English teams not only domestically, but also in terms of European competition.
Currently, there are still four English teams battling to progress in European competition. Last night, Liverpool and Spurs secured their places in the Champions League semifinals, thanks to VAR heroics denying Raheem Sterling his accolade. Arsenal and Chelsea face their tests tonight to see if they can do the same in the Europa League. The two London sides have advantages from their opening fixtures.
It’s nice to see that it’s not just Liverpool carrying the Premier League in Europe. I’m sure even their fans will admit that it’s nice to see other English clubs doing well, so long as they aren’t a threat to the Reds.
Liverpool faces their biggest test of the season in Barcelona, while Tottenham will face a similarly tough side in Ajax. Ajax has done incredibly well this season so they mustn’t be overlooked. Arsenal faces Napoli away from home (currently 2-0 on aggregate to the Gunners. Chelsea faces Slavia Prague at Stamford Bridge (currently 1-0 in favour of the Blues).
There is a high chance that an English side will win at least one European competition, perhaps both. Even if that isn’t the case, English football fans can be proud to watch their clubs dominating Europe once more. It really is great to see after Real Madrid and Sevilla’s continued dominance.
Do you think an English side will win the Champions League/Europa League this season?
