Express Sport have reported that Tottenham is now the favourites to sign Fulham left-back Ryan Sessegnon to replace the outgoing Danny Rose.

Tottenham already has two summer signings in Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele wrapped up, while Kieran Trippier has departed for Atletico Madrid.

It looks like Danny Rose might soon follow Trippier out the exit door, and Mauricio Pochettino will prioritize the signing of full-backs to replace the duo.

More from Tottenham Hotspur

19-year-old Sessegnon has been a revelation for Fulham ever since he made his debut for them in the Championship at just the age of 16. An adaptable player who can also play as a left-winger, he scored an astounding 15 goals in his second full season with the senior team.

He was, however, underwhelming for the Cottagers as they returned to the top flight in 2018/19. Fulham spent a lot of money on new summer signings last season and saw two managerial changes as they finished 19th and got relegated.

Still only a teenager, Sessegnon is understandably attracting attention from several teams in Europe’s top leagues. Fulham is probably destined to lose him, considering he has only a year left on his contract.

Tottenham will probably hesitate to cough up the £45 million asking price and are ready to pay a fee more in the region of £25 million. The situation with his contract and the fact that the player himself wants to leave will give Spurs some weight in the negotiations

Sessegnon would be a valuable and shrewd addition to the squad. He has the potential to be Spurs’ starting left-back for more than a decade to come. Given his attacking instincts, he could also play as a wing-back, should Pochettino prefer a back 3 as he often does.

Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund are other clubs interested in him, but it looks like Tottenham have stolen ahead in the race.

The vast difference in the two clubs’ valuation of the player could stretch this saga out for a while, but it’s unlikely that a player of Sessegnon’s calibre will spend another season in the Championship.
