CB: Stefan de Vrij

This was the toughest call I had to make at center back. In spite of his improved performance this year, Leonardo Bonucci’s poor play last year disqualified him from this spot with such stiff competition to overcome. However, the same can’t be said of Milan Skriniar. Both Skriniar and de Vrij have been playing at a high level for the last year+, but in my opinion de Vrij has just been a bit better. He has been one of the better defenders in the league since his time at Lazio and I think his inclusion will make this an unbelievably strong back line.

CB: Matthijs de Ligt

Juve’s young star was pretty much a sure thing for the defense in this 11. He was incredible throughout Ajax’s surprising run through the Champions League last year. Outside of one slip up, he has continued to play at that high level for Juve this season and during his time with the Netherlands. It’s incredible how talented he is at such a young age and the fact that he would be able to make it into a starting 11 that featured Italy’s 2 best defense at just 20 years old shows just why Juve was willing to spend so much to bring him in this summer.

CB: Diego Godin

Inter Milan already had one of the best defenses in Serie A last season and now the addition of Diego Godin has them looking like they may have finally overtaken Juventus as the league’s best. He has long been one of the world’s best center backs, helping lead Atletico Madrid to a decade of success where they won the Europa League twice, made it to 2 Champions League finals, and won La Liga at a time where it seemed impossible to finish ahead of both Messi’s Barcelona and Ronaldo’s Real Madrid. He might not be at his peak anymore, but he is still playing at a high enough level to be considered the best defender in this 11.
