Arsenal:

How often have Arsenal’s defensive woes cost them games? Arsenal and their defensive shortcomings are a never-ending saga. From Shkodran Mustafi’s blunders to Monreal’s flaws, the Gunners have been shaky in the defence for years.

When Unai Emery took over, whispers started circulating in England that his playing from the back tactics won’t work with a sterile defence. However, Emery tried to mend the defence by signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos in his first season but there weren’t many positives that could be taken from his signing as Mustafi continued to be lost cause in the backline.

This season Arsenal prioritized to strengthen their defence and bought Kieran Tierney and David Luiz. Despite signing an experienced Luiz the North Londoners have conceded 15 goals in 11 league games and only kept 2 clean sheets so far.

Arsenal can fund a transfer to bring Samuel Umtiti to the Emirates in January in order to repair the leaky defence. Come any day, the Mustafi’s and the Sokaratis’ are no match when compared to Umtiti. Umtiti is a class apart in all departments and can truly transform the Gunners defence into a top one. He could be a leader of the backline marshalling the others and with the experience under his belt, one should back Umtiti to lead the line.

Unai Emery will be more than happy to add a defender who has the capability to build an attack from the back and which will finally put Emery’s fears to the bed. The former Lyon player’s acuteness and physicality will be a valuable asset in the Premier League and will assist Arsenal a lot should they sign him.
