5 key takeaways as Chelsea clinch Champions League place
5. A legend departs Stamford Bridge in Pedro
Lampard confirmed what we all knew after the game, Pedro has played his last match at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. It’s a real shame the fans weren’t there to send him off the right way, because he is a legend in every sense of the word.
In the broader scope of things, his achievements with Chelsea are far less important than what he achieved with Lionel Messi at Barcelona, but he was an excellent servant in West London as well.
He scored some very big goals for the club, and some screamers too, particularly in the title-winning 2016/17 season. His stunning curler against Spurs as well as his smashing strike against Everton come to mind, but there have been so many more.
Pedro truly brought joy to people’s hearts, playing with that confidence and determination which made him win every trophy imaginable in Spain, and bringing trophies with him to England as well.
The man is a true professional, which was exemplified by his first touch against Wolves being on the edge of his own box after sprinting back to dispossess an attacker, whereas he could’ve just stayed forward and looked to score.
He could’ve potentially had a goal, too, if Abraham had passed to him on a breakaway opportunity (which pissed off every single Chelsea fan worldwide, including me). But it wasn’t to be.
The Spaniard is off to Roma at the end of the campaign, and Chelsea supporters will never forget what he did for the club. Pedro is a Chelsea, Barcelona, and football legend, and he always will be. Thank you, Pedrito, and good luck.
Chelsea are officially in the top four now and have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. While this season has ended on a high note, buckle up Chelsea fans, it only gets better from here.
