Arsenal are unbeaten in five meetings with Brighton, including beating them 2-0 in the Carabao Cup in October. However, the Seagulls had lost just two of eight visits to North London beforehand, winning there on four occasions in the last six years.

Arsenal vs Brighton preview

For the third time out of the last four seasons, Arsenal have spent Christmas Day top of the Premier League table, but will they still be there come 25 May? Last Saturday night, the Gunners battled to a 1-0 victory over Everton at Bramley-Moore Dock; Viktor Gyökeres' first half penalty the difference. That's now back-to-back unconvincing victories for Mikel Arteta's team, have required two own goals, the second of which came in injury time, to defeat bottom of the table Wolves a week earlier.

The Gunners though do remain imperious at home, winning all but one match in front of their own supporters across all competitions this season. This includes ousting Crystal Palace from the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, taking the lead through another own goal, only for the Eagles to snatch a stoppage time equaliser. In the subsequent shootout, the first 15 spot-kicks were expertly converted, it felt as though the night would never end, until Kepa Arrizabalaga's save saw them progress to the semi-finals. Back in the league, this is a crucial fortnight for Arteta's team, facing Aston Villa, Bournemouth and then Liverpool after this, so will Arsenal pick up three important points here?

As for Brighton & Hove Albion, they travel to North London struggling for consistency. Last Saturday, the Seagulls drew 0-0 with Sunderland by the South Coast, indebted to goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen for the point they earned, given that the Dutchman made six saves.

As a result, Fabian Hürzeler's team are now without a win in four, previously beaten by both Aston Villa and Liverpool, as well as frustratingly only mustering a 1-1 draw with West Ham; Georginio Rutter salvaging a share of the spoils in stoppage time. All of this leaves the Albion ninth, just outside the potential European places, but they've only won one of their last five away matches, dating back to September, which will have to improve, so can Brighton derail the league-leaders?

Arsenal team news

Mikel Arteta is very short of defensive options, given that Gabriel, Benjamin White and Cristhian Mosquera remain sidelined. Piero Hincapié also sat out the mid-week EFL Cup victory, but there is optimism he'll be able to return, which would see Myles Lewis-Skelly drop out.

In attack, Gabriel Martinelli picked up a knock on Tuesday, but Leandro Trossard was always likely to start against his former side anyway, as is Viktor Gyökeres, back leading the line, having made just eight appearances, scoring against Portsmouth in the FA Cup, during his time at Brighton.

Arsenal predicted lineup vs Brighton & Hove Albion: (4-3-3): Raya, Timber, Saliba, Hincapié, Calafiori; Zubimendi, Rice, Ødegaard; Saka, Trossard, Gyökeres.

Arsenal player to watch vs Brighton

Bukayo Saka has scored three goals in his last six meetings with Brighton, one of which came when the pair clashed in the Carabao Cup two months ago, so will he fire Arsenal to victory again?

Brighton team news

Carlos Baleba is away at the Africa Cup of Nations while Fabian Hürzeler is also without Adam Webster, Solly March and Stefanos Tzimas.

At centre-back, Jan Paul van Hecke is expected to return following illness, while Lewis Dunk will certainly do so, having served a one-match suspension against Sunderland.

Danny Welbeck

Diego Gómez will also be back in following a ban of his own, while Mats Wieffer was replaced at half time last weekend due to a knock, but this isn't serious. Wieffer and Ferdi Kadıoğlu would both sit out Tuesday's trip to West Ham if cautioned.

Brighton & Hove Albion predicted lineup vs Arsenal: (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Wieffer, Dunk, van Hecke, De Cuyper; Hinshelwood, Ayari, Minteh, Georginio, Kadıoğlu; Welbeck.

Brighton player to watch vs Arsenal

Danny Welbeck is currently nursing a back injury, but could lead the line against his former side. He scored 32 goals for Arsenal, but can he now add to his four against them, one of which came for Brighton in North London three years ago?

Arsenal vs Brighton prediction

We are backing Arsenal for a win. The Gunners are imperious at home, while Brighton are struggling for consistency, so Mikel Arteta's team should be too strong: Arsenal 2-0 Brighton & Hove Albion.
