Lanús beat Atlético Mineiro 5-4 on penalties and won the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana after a scoreless draw in regulation and extra time. The final in Asunción had a bit of everything, but it ended up decided by Nahuel Losada, who became the main figure of the match with three saves in the shootout and pushed the Argentine club into the group of the tournament’s biggest champions. For Atlético, the loss means missing out on its first title in the competition and also on a spot in the 2026 Libertadores.
A match that promised more than it delivered
Atlético Mineiro started with the attitude you expect from a team that feels the trophy within reach. It tried to control possession, pushed the play through the wings and created its best chances with Dudu, Arana and Bernard. Bernard’s shot off the crossbar was the first sign that the goal was close, but that moment never came. There was always something in the way, and that something was usually Losada.

On the other side, Lanús needed some time to settle in. The team looked uncomfortable early on, then adjusted the tempo and pushed Atlético back at certain moments. Carrera tried long range shots, Castillo looked for short combinations and the Argentine side grew in confidence once it noticed Atlético Mineiro losing intensity. Even so, the match remained tight and full of stops. It was the kind of final where no one wants to give an inch.
The second half carried the same tone. Atlético came back more organized, threatened with Dudu and later with Biel, who had two promising attempts. Hulk tried to take charge the way he usually does in big games, but found no room to work. Lanús chose a more cautious approach. It attacked less often, but when it did, the passing was cleaner, especially when Aquino and Castillo found open lanes through the middle.

Extra time brought pure balance. Atlético Mineiro almost scored with Biel, who kept pushing until the last minute, while Lanús gained confidence late on and started to appear more often around the box, always struggling with the final touch.
Losada turns the final into a title
In the penalty shootout, tension took over Asunción. Acosta missed for Lanús, goalkeeper Everson kept Atlético alive by converting his attempt and the series went to sudden death. In the end, Losada saved Vitor Hugo’s shot and sent the stadium into chaos. It was the fourth penalty he stopped in this edition of the tournament, sealing a run that was already impressive.
Lanús lifts the Sudamericana again after twelve years and joins the group of two time champions. Atlético Mineiro heads back to Brazil with the feeling that the trophy slipped through the cracks on a night when it had initiative but didn’t have the keeper who decided everything.
