Having beaten Barnsley home and away the last time the duo met in 2016/17, Brighton are seeking three straight victories over the Tykes for the first time since 1992.

Barnsley vs Brighton preview

Brighton & Hove Albion have never won a major trophy, most-recently going further than the fourth round of this competition in 1978/79. Nevertheless, with almost half of Premier League clubs competing in European competition, they'll surely fancy their chances of a deep run. In the previous round, the Seagulls demolished Oxford United 6-0 at the Kassam; Stefanos Tzimas bagging a late brace, while Olivier Boscagli, Brajan Gruda, Diego Gómez and Tommy Watson were also on target. This made it Brighton's biggest away win of all time, eclipsing a 6-1 victory at Fulham in 1987.

In the Premier League meantime, a bit of a mixed bag for Fabian Hürzeler's team so far. On Saturday, the Albion raced into a 2-0 lead at home to Tottenham, Yankuba Minteh and then Yasin Ayari scoring, only to throw it away, with Jan Paul van Hecke's late own goal seeing Spurs pinch a 2-2. This means Brighton have won only once in the league so far, this a memorable victory over Manchester City, traveling to Chelsea next weekend. Before then, will they book their place in the League Cup last 16?

As for Barnsley, having dumped out Fleetwood on penalties and then Rotherham, both at home, they're on the cusp of a first fourth round appearance in 16 seasons. The Tykes are currently enduring a fourth successive season in EFL League One, their longest stay outside the top two divisions for two decades, and have made a decent start to their promotion push.

On Saturday, Conor Hourihane's side were beaten 1-0 by Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, but this was just their second defeat of the season, also losing to AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane in August. Thus, at Oakwell, they're still unbeaten in this campaign, winning five of six matches across league and cup, so can Barnsley cause a major upset and eliminate Brighton in South Yorkshire on Tuesday?

Brighton team news

Fabian Hürzeler boasts a very deep squad so, as he did at Oxford, he'll make wholesale changes.

17 year old Harry Howell was the most surprising starter at the Kassam, his first-ever senior start, but at least one of Greek duo Stefanos Tzimas or Charalampos Kostoulas, or perhaps both, will lead the line this time. Jason Steele will once again be donning the gloves, with two summer signings Olivier Boscagli and Diego Coppola at centre-back, both seeking to stake a claim for league minutes.

Lastly, Adam Webster, Solly March and Jack Hinshelwood are all sidelined while Maxim De Cuyper is a doubt so, as was the case at the weekend, Ferdi Kadıoğlu will deputise at left-back.

Brighton & Hove Albion predicted lineup vs Barnsley: (4-4-2): Steele; Wieffer, Coppola, Boscagli, Kadıoğlu; Gómez, Milner, Watson, Gruda; Kostoulas, Tzimas.

Brighton player to watch vs Barnsley

Charalampos Kostoulas arrived from Olympiacos for around £30 million this summer, despite having only scored seven senior goals for the Greek champions, so can he bag his first in Brighton colours?

Barnsley vs Brighton prediction

We are backing Brighton to swat Barnsley aside with ease at Oakwell, with the Seagulls' second-string side set to be far too strong for the Tykes in the end: Barnsley 0-3 Brighton & Hove Albion.
