Brazil have won 16 of their last 18 meetings with Chile, including each of the last five, while la Roja have never previously defeated the Seleção on Brazilian soil.

Brazil vs Chile preview

It has been a chaotic few years for Brazil, with Ramon Menezes, Fernando Diniz and Dorival Júnior all taking charge of matches since they crashed out in Qatar, but the five-times world champions are now planning for next summer's World Cup. Carlo Ancelotti finally took charge of the Seleção for the very first time in June, commencing with a goalless draw against Ecuador in Guayaquil. Five days later though, Vinícius Júnior was the only scorer against Paraguay in São Paulo.

These results leave Brazil third in the CONMEBOL standings, ten points below run-away leaders Argentina, but guaranteed a spot at next summer's tournament, the only nation on earth to feature at all 23 editions of the World Cup. These will be the Seleção's final two competitive fixtures before the big one in North America, concluding qualification 4,150 meters above sea level against Bolivia in El Alto on Tuesday. Before then, will Ancelotti's team claim a victory at the Maracanã?

As for Chile, well they will not be going to the World Cup next June, as their years of misery continue. Since winning back-to-back Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016, la Roja supporters have had very little to celebrate, with this the third successive World Cup they've missed out on. So far, Chile have won just two of 16 qualifiers, scoring only nine goals and suffering ten defeats, their two victories both coming in Santiago, beating Peru in October 2023 and Venezuela in November last year.

Overall, having exited last summer's Copa América in the group stages too, la Roja have won two of 21 competitive fixtures since 1 February 2022. This form saw Ricardo Gareca sacked during the summer, with Nicolás Córdova in interim charge. Since CONMEBOL adopted the enormous league table format in the '90s, Chile's lowest-ever points tally is the 12 collected in 2002 qualification. Well, with this trip to Rio de Janeiro followed by Uruguay's visit to Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos to come on Tuesday, they'll do well to avoid breaking that record, currently on ten.

Brazil team news

Carlo Ancelotti is without Éder Militão, Joelinton, Vinícius Júnior, Matheus Cunha, Rodrygo, Antony and Neymar, but still has plenty of quality options at his disposal; Vini Jr is suspended.

Alisson is firmly the number one goalkeeper, while fit again Gabriel could partner captain Marquinhos at the back, with Alexsandro, who debuted in June, dropping out. Further forward, Estêvão will be hoping for a start, while Richarlison could lead the line, looking to add to his 20 international goals.

Brazil predicted lineup vs Chile: (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Wesley, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Caio Henrique; Casemiro, Guimarães, Estêvão, João Pedro, Raphinha; Richarlison.

Brazil player to watch vs Chile

Raphinha scored 34 goals for Barcelona last season, including 13 in the Champions League, so can he add to his tally of 11 for Brazil, six of which have come since this qualification campaign began?

Chile team news

Chilean legendary veterans Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sánchez have both featured prominently during this campaign, but neither have been called up, with Nicolás Córdova focussing on the future.

Meantime, defender Francisco Sierralta's red card against Bolivia means he is suspended, while forward Víctor Dávila is banned due to yellow card accumulation. All three goalkeepers are uncapped, with Lawrence Vigouroux of Swansea the most-likely to earn a debut, while only two squad members, defenders Guillermo Maripán and Paulo Díaz, have more than 35 caps to their name.

Chile predicted lineup vs Brazil: (4-3-3): Vigouroux; Hormazábal, Maripán, Kuščević, Suazo; Echeverría, Loyola, Pizarro; Osorio, Cepeda, Brereton Díaz.

Chile player to watch vs Brazil

Brereton Díaz is the top-scorer in this squad with seven international goals, the most-recent of which came during a hat-trick against the Dominican Republic in June 2023. So, can the Stoke-born Derby County striker bag a goal at the Maracanã?

Brazil vs Chile prediction

As already outlined, we're backing Brazil for a very comfortable victory, given that the Seleção is jam-packed full of talent, while Chile are currently South America's worst team: Brazil 3-0 Chile.
