This is a repeat of the 1979 European Cup Final when Trevor Francis was the only scorer as Nottingham Forest claimed the first of their two successive European titles at the Olympiapark München. The pair also met in the first round of the UEFA Cup in 1995, with Forest prevailing on away goals after it ended 2-2 on aggregate.

Malmö have lost all five away matches against Premier League clubs to date, conceding 14 goals.

Nottingham Forest vs Malmö preview

Nottingham Forest's European return is yet to spark into life, so can they pick up three important points here? So far, the Garibaldi Reds have collected five points from four Europa League fixtures, thereby down in 23rd place, very much hoping to end up significantly higher. Since the arrival of Sean Dyche, they have beaten Porto 2-0 at the City Ground, before a very drab goalless draw with Sturm Graz earlier this month; Morgan Gibbs-White seeing a penalty saved at Liebenauer Stadium. Their remaining opponents are Urtrecht, Braga and Ferencváros, all of which is winnable, but they'll need to pick up plenty of points if they harbour any hopes of gatecrashing the top eight.

Meantime, in the Premier League, Dyche's side have climbed out of the relegation zone by virtue of claiming seven points from their last three matches. After a comeback 3-1 victory over Leeds, the Tricky Trees demolished beleaguered champions Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Saturday; Murillo, Nicolò Savona and Gibbs-White all on target on Merseyside. So now, can Nottingham Forest climb up the gigantic Europa League table with a victory in this one?

As for Malmö, with the 2025 Allsvenskan season now concluded, they ended up down in sixth place, only finishing lower than that once since 2009, a disastrous campaign for a side who've won four of the last five titles. So, unless they manage to win next year's Svenska Cupen, they will not be in any European competition next season.

This season's European campaign began all the way back on 8 July, winning qualifiers against Iberia and RFS before being dumped out of the Champions League by Øresund Bridge rivals København. Since dropping into this competition, the Sky Blues have collected just one point from their four league phase fixtures, holding Dinamo Zagreb to a 1-1 draw, but suffering defeats at the hands of Ludogorets Razgrad, Viktoria Plzeň and Panathinaikos. Manager Henrik Rydström was thereby sacked in September, and reports suggest current caretaker boss Anes Mravac is set to move to Middlesbrough to become Kim Hellberg's assistant. Thus, in summary, all is not well at Malmö right now, so Nottingham Forest should cruise to victory on the banks of the River Trent.

After being booked in each of the first three Europa League matches, Igor Jesus served a suspension in Graz but is back now, while Callum Hudson-Odoi is also set to return in attack. Morgan Gibbs-White would sit out next month's trip to Utrecht if cautioned.

Nottingham Forest predicted lineup vs Malmö: (4-2-3-1): Sels; Savona, Milenković, Murillo, Williams; Anderson, Sangaré, Ndoye, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi; Igor Jesus.

Nottingham Forest player to watch vs Malmö

We've just mentioned him, but Morgan Gibbs-White is on fire at the moment, scoring four goals in five matches under Dyche, and he'll be their most-likely scorer here too.

Malmö team news

Striker Daníel Guðjohnsen, son of former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eiður, scored when Malmö were last in action against GAIS on 9 November, so could lead the line in the East Midlands. His compatriot Arnór Sigurðsson is currently sidelined.

Elsewhere, former Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen and centre-back Pontus Jansson, once of Leeds and Brentford, may be familiar faces in the Sky Blues' lineup.

Malmö predicted lineup vs Nottingham Forest: (4-3-3): Olsen; Stryger Larsen, Jansson, Đurić, Busanello; Busuladžić, Rosengren, Skogmar; Ekong, Hakšabanović, Guðjohnsen.

Malmö player to watch vs Nottingham Forest

Sead Hakšabanović, formerly of Celtic and Stoke, has scored four times in Europe so far this season, including a brace against Sigma Olomouc in August, so will be Malmö's primary threat here.

Nottingham Forest vs Malmö prediction

We are confidently backing Nottingham Forest to be far too strong for a pretty poor Malmö team at the City Ground on Thursday, forecasting a commanding win: Nottingham Forest 2-0 Malmö.
