Fulham have won their last two meetings with Cambridge United, albeit this did come when the pair were in the fourth-tier together in 1996/97; a lot has changed. Their sole previous League Cup encounter was their very first meeting in August 1971, a 4-0 win for the Whites at Craven Cottage.

Fulham vs Cambridge United preview

Two seasons ago, Fulham reached the EFL Cup semi-finals for the very first time, narrowly beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Liverpool, but how far will they go this time? In the previous round, Marco Silva's side dumped out Bristol City 2-0 at home, with Raúl Jiménez on target after an early own goal.

More recently, on Saturday night, the Fulham faithful had a night to remember, as their side came from a goal down to comprehensively defeat West London rivals Brentford 3-1. Alex Iwobi and Harry Wilson scoring quick-fire goals on the cusp of half time, before a freak own goal rubber stamped the points, with Rodrigo Muniz cruelly seeing a spectacular strike disallowed following VAR review. Having failed to win any of their first three Premier League outings, that's now back-to-back wins for Silva's side, who will travel to Villa Park full of confidence on Sunday. Before that, can Fulham book their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round with victory on the banks of the River Thames on Tuesday?

As for Cambridge United, they're one of only two fourth-tier clubs to have got this far, ousting Bristol Rovers and Charlton to achieve this, thereby featuring in the third round for the first time this century, last going further 33 years ago. Following relegation from EFL League One last season, the U's aim is simply, gain promotion, but they've made a mixed start to their promotion push.

At the weekend, Neil Harris' side claimed a much-needed morale-boosting victory, beating Fleetwood 2-1 at the Abbey, thanks to two goals in two minutes from Adam Mayor and then Shayne Lavery. This though is only Cambridge United's third league win of the season in nine attempts, leaving them ninth. The visitors will be backed by over 5,000 fans on Tuesday, an impressive turnout considering just 5,069 saw their home game on Saturday, but Fulham are firm favourites for victory.
