If you were unable to watch the second semi-final in the Nations League between reigning champions Spain and France, you missed a game to remember. Lamine Yamal continued to reach new heights, and Rayan Cherki announced himself on the world stage. Spain built up a four goal lead and was able to hold on to come out victorious 5-4. While both teams showcased stars who have seized the current landscape of world football, they also seem poised to maintain their current status for years to come.
"For me, it's the best player across the whole year, but everyone sees it their own way. I am confident we will win Thursday, but whether we win or not, I would vote for the best player over the whole year", said Yamal.
Lamine the dream
There is nowhere else to start than with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. The youngster had yet another stunning display, netting a brace and grabbing the Man of the Match award. The goals up his tally to 48 goal contributions for both Barcelona and Spain this season. The performance comes at just the right time for Yamal, as the Spaniard is in contention for the Ballon d’Or. After Ousmane Dembélé was marked as the favorite, Yamal had some fiery comments when asked about who should win the award.
With the win, Yamal has now put himself right in the race for the award. The big reveal will be in September, and the 17-year-old can strengthen his case with a win on Sunday.

New star in the making?
While Yamal has already had many moments with his national team, it was the first game of note with France for Rayan Cherki. The Frenchman might’ve started on the bench, but he made up for his lack of playing time with a stunning display. His first involvement came in the 79th minute. A ball between the lines from Kylian Mbappé found Cherki, and the midfielder pulled off a miraculous strike.
Cherki wouldn’t stop there. The Lyon player would provide another assist to Ranal Kolo Muani, as well as an incisive pass to Malo Gusto leading to yet another goal for France. Despite only having a tiny cameo, Cherki made the most of his time in the spotlight. This performance is a perfect indicator of why the Frenchman is linked with a summer transfer to Manchester City. With a valuation of only 45 million pounds, the Citizens appear to be getting a great bargain.
