Scotland have won three of their last four meetings with Greece, including a 1-0 victory in Piraeus in March. The five previous encounters between the pair have produced just ten goals.

Greece vs Scotland preview

This is the start of one of the biggest weeks in a generation for Scotland, so will they claim the required result in Piraeus? Last month, when Greece visited Hampden, the Tartan Army were forced to endure a truly dismal performance, with Kostas Tsimikas firing the Greeks in front on the hour mark in Mount Florida; the most it's been coming goal you'll ever see. However, out of nowhere, the home side turned it around, with goals from Ryan Christie and Lewis Ferguson getting them in front, before Lyndon Dykes pounced on a catastrophic error from Konstantis Tzolakis to somehow snatch victory.

Overall, Scotland now have ten points from four matches in Group C. Steve Clarke's side battled to a goalless draw in Copenhagen on opening night, subsequently beating Belarus home and away as well as that famous win over Greece. This leaves the Dark Blues level on points with Denmark, albeit the Danes' goal difference is superior by six.

So, assuming Denmark beat Belarus simultaneously, a point for Scotland in Piraeus would set up a winner takes all clash with the Danes at Hampden on Tuesday. Should the Tartan Army slip up on the Athens Riviera, their hopes of automatic World Cup qualification would be over, condemned to a place in March's play-offs. A win or a draw here would do, the goal difference situation means there's no benefit between the two, so can Clarke's team claim the result they need?

As for Greece, many were touting them as potential Group C winners but, with two games to go, they're already out of the running. As well as losing in Glasgow, Ivan Jovanović's team have also lost home and away against Denmark, smashed 3-1 at Parken last time out, so they will not be traveling to North America next summer.

Thus, the Blue and Whites' major tournament exile will go on, having not featured at any finals since Brazil 2014, missing out on a spot at Euro 2024 by virtue of a penalty shootout defeat in a play-off final against Georgia. Jovanović's team though did gain promotion to Nations League A, beating England at Wembley and then hammering Scotland in the play-offs, so, even with nothing to play for, will not be easily swatted aside. So, can the Greeks shatter Scotland's automatic World Cup dreams, or will the Tartan Army have a result to celebrate at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium?

Greece team news

Midfielder Christos Zafiris and striker Fotis Ioannidis are both suspended, having collected their second yellow cards of the campaign at Parken. Meantime, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Giorgos Kyriakopoulos, Giannis Konstantelias and Sotiris Alexandropoulos all miss out due to injury.

After Konstantinos Tzolakis' howler at Hampden, Odysseas Vlachodimos was reinstated in goal against Denmark, so will be donning the gloves.

Captain Tasos Bakasetas will win his 80th cap, Christos Tzolis has been on fire for Club Brugge this season while Vangelis Pavlidis will lead the line, having scored both during the 2-1 victory over England at Wembley last year.

Greece predicted lineup vs Scotland: (4-2-3-1): Vlachodimos; Rota, Koulierakis, Chatzidiakos, Tsimikas; Kourbelis, Mantalos, Karetsas, Bakasetas, Tzolis; Pavlidis.

Greece player to watch vs Scotland

17 year old Konstantinos Karetsas terrorised Scotland at Hampden during the Nations League play-off in March, scoring his first-ever international goal that day, so will he do similar here?

Scotland team news

Ryan Christie and Lewis Ferguson can return, having served suspensions against Belarus. Aaron Hickey, Ben Gannon-Doak and Ché Adams though have to be careful, because a caution from referee Jesús Gil Manzano would see them miss Tuesday's huge clash with Denmark.

Elsewhere, first-choice goalkeeper Angus Gunn has suffered a knee ligament injury so, at the age of 42, Craig Gordon will be donning the gloves, 21 years on from his international debut.

In midfield, with Billy Gilmour injured, Kenny McLean could come in alongside Ferguson and John McGinn.

Scotland predicted lineup vs Greece: (4-5-1): Gordon; Ralston, Hanley, McKenna, Robertson; McLean, Ferguson, McGinn, McTominay, Christie; Dykes.

Scotland player to watch vs Greece

Scott McTominay scored the only goal when Scotland won 1-0 in Greece back in March, a win rather overshadowed by the second leg, but could he be the hero in Piraeus again?

Greece vs Scotland prediction

It certainly won't be straight-forward, but we are backing Scotland to claim the point they require at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium to set up a huge showdown on Tuesday: Greece 1-1 Scotland.
