The current (pun fully intended) NWSL leaders Kansas City Current take on Racing Louisville, who sit 6th in the table as we are nearly midway through the 2025 season. Kansas City are dealing with major injury blows as captain Lo Labonta remains out after picking up an injury during the international window with the United States. The Current play their first home game in a month, and are looking to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Blink and you'll miss it
Kansas City's Michelle Cooper gets the ball rolling with a fantastic run in the first 30 seconds that goes just wide. The USWNT newcomer put up a goal and an assist in last week's game against Gotham. This time, she makes a diving pass toward Temwa Chawinga that results in an own goal from Louisville. Not even a minute later, she makes another cross toward Chawinga, which she scores, but is ruled offside. The dynamic duo is starting off hot this evening.
Can't stop the Current
An in-form Cooper slides the ball into the back of the net with a sublime pass from Hailie Mace in the 14th minute, putting Kansas City up 2-0 not even a quarter of the way through the game. Scoring in back to back games, she's already broken her record for goals in a season with four. Bia Zaneratto gets on the scoreboard with a goal of her own assisted by Vanessa DiBernardo in the 18th minute. Even when not scoring, the Current maintain most of the possession. It's all KC at the half.
Trouble hits Kansas City early in the second half with Michelle Cooper going down with what appears to be cramping, but she gets back up to continue, After a heavy collision with Louisville's Taylor Flint, she goes down again. 3-0 at the hour mark and Racing has put Cooper on the ground more than they've put a shot on target. Right after this, Flint gets a yellow for a late foul on DiBernardo.
Racing comes roaring back
Louisville finally gets a goal in the 61st minute. Janine Sonis gets her first goal of the season with a deflection off of Mace. The Current almost immediately equalize with a shot from Chawinga, but with a narrow miss.
Michelle Cooper is replaced by Haley Hopkins in the 69th minute due to injury. It was her third time going down in the game. Hopefully it is more of a precautionary situation than a serious concern. She leaves the game with a goal and setting up the own goal for Kansas City.
Louisville get a second goal off a thrilling header from Uchenna Kanu in the 87th minute. It's going to be close, but they are on the comeback with not much time left in the game.
It had to be Chawinga
Temwa Chawinga closes out the game with a last second BANGER to give Kansas City a 4-2 win. With Kansas City getting goal after goal, last season's MVP just had to get in on the action herself.
