Netherlands are unbeaten in 13 meetings with Poland, dating back to 1979, winning seven of their last eight encounters. The pair's most recent clash came during Euro 2024, in which the Dutch fought back to win 2-1 at Volksparkstadion, with Wout Weghorst the late match-winner.

Netherlands vs Poland preview

These two are forecast to be the top two in World Cup qualifying Group G, making the head-to-head encounters between the pair potentially decisive. Netherlands made a perfect start to this campaign back in June, first defeating Finland 2-0 in Helsinki; Memphis and Denzel Dumfries the scorers.

Three days later, the Oranje enjoyed their biggest victory for 13 years, hammering minnows Malta 8-0 in Groningen; Memphis, Virgil van Dijk, Xavi Simons, Donyell Malen, Noa Lang and Micky van de Ven all on target. Since Ronald Koeman's return, Holland have enjoyed impressive results, reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2024, before featuring in the Nations League quarter-finals earlier this year, ousted on penalties by Spain in Valencia, after the tie had finished 5-5 on aggregate. So now, will they take a huge step towards next summer's World Cup by beating their main Group G rivals in Rotterdam?

As for Poland, they've featured at five successive European Championships as well as the last two World Cup, qualifying for nine overall, but are they a fading force? Last year, the Eagles were relegated from Nations League A for the very first time, defeated by Scotland in the last minute of the last game in Warsaw. They did then start World Cup qualification with back-to-back victories, beating both Lithuania 1-0 and Malta 2-0 at Stadion Narodowy, before suffering a major set back in June, defeated 2-1 by Finland at Helsingin Olympiastadion.

Captain Robert Lewandowski was not involved in that one, vowing to never play for head coach Michał Probierz again, so the manager was duly sacked, so this'll be a first game in charge for Jan Urban. That defeat in Helsinki means Poland face a real fight with Finland to even secure a play-off place, the duo meet again in Chorzów on Sunday, and makes it very unlikely they'll be able to challenge the Dutch for top spot. Thus, a home win does appear the most likely outcome at De Kuip.

Netherlands team news

Jeremie Frimpong of Liverpool is sidelined due to injury, meaning Denzel Dumfries is likely to start at right-back, chosen over Arsenal's Jurriën Timber, who would be the more defensive option.

Elsewhere, Premier League pair Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders will start in midfield, while Bournemouth's Justin Kluivert is hoping to feature in a sixth successive international, having not played for the Netherlands since a friendly against Peru in September 2018 before his return.

Netherlands predicted lineup vs Poland: (4-3-3): Verbruggen; Dumfries, van Dijk, van Hecke, van de Ven; Gravenberch, de Jong, Reijnders; Simons, Gakpo, Memphis.

Netherlands player to watch vs Poland

Memphis' double against Malta at Euroborg took his tally to 50 international goals in 102 caps, now joint-level with all-time record scorer Robin van Persie. At club level, he plays for Brasileirão side Corinthians, netting 15 times for the São Paulo-based outfit since his debut a year ago, he also remains the first-choice striker for his nation, so can he break van Persie's record in Rotterdam?

Poland team news

As already outlined, a change of management means that star striker Robert Lewandowski is back.

Under previous head coach, Poland have often deployed a 3-5-2, giving Lewandowski a partner with which to work, but it's hard to predict what new boss Jan Urban will do.

In goal, there's no Wojciech Szczęsny nor Łukasz Fabiański anymore, so Łukasz Skorupski will start a fifth successive competitive match. English-born Matty Cash will keep his place at right-wing-back given that Bartosz Bereszyński, who is without a club, has not been called up.

Poland predicted lineup vs Netherlands: (3-4-2): Skorupski; Tomasz, Bednarek, Kiwior; Cash, Zieliński, Slisz, Szymański, Zalewski; Świderski, Lewandowski.

Poland player to watch vs Netherlands

We've already mentioned him a lot, but we're going to do so again, given that Robert Lewandowski has both the most goals and most caps of any man in Polish national team history. His 85 goals have been scored against 37 different nations, so can he add the Netherlands to this list?

Netherlands vs Poland prediction

We are backing the Netherlands to comfortably prevail at De Kuip, likely to be simply far too strong for a Poland side that frankly isn't up to much these days: Netherlands 2-0 Poland.
