One of the questions marks for France ahead of their clash against Spain in one of the semifinals of Euro 2024 is the availability of their star player, Kylian Mbappé.
The former PSG player suffered a broken nose in the match against Austria. He then didn't play in their second group stage match against Netherlands but came back and scored a penalty in the draw against Poland.
In order to play, Mbappé has been wearing a protective face mask. However, he's mentioned how much he dislikes it and it seems to be having an effect on his game. He's yet to really stamp his authority in Euro 2024.
Against Portugal, he was taken off in extra time after he was struck in the face with the ball, aggravting the injury.
"We knew that extra time was a little but hard for him," Didier Deschamps said. "From a muscular point of view, he'll definitely be on the pitch. We wanted him to rest up as much as possible. We've done everything we could and I'm convinced Kylian is in a good place. He'll do everything to give 110% tomorrow, as will the rest of the group."
How effective Mbappé can actually be remains to be seen.
Again, France has struggled to score, having scored only three times so far in Euro 2024 -- two own goals and a penalty.
Still, all Mbappé needs is one burst of speed or one moment to change a game. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is very much aware of the threat Mbappé is regardless if he's fully fit.
"Footballers like him are unpredictable. Kylian Mbappé at 50% s like any other players at 100%. can decide a game at any moment. He's a genius: a super world-class player," De la Fuente said."
Whatever Mbappé's involvement, Spain are going to be put to task as they'll be without Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal in defense. Le Normand picked up a yellow, earning him a suspension. Carvajal is also suspended as he was sent off after picking up two yellow cards.
Mbappé may be France's best player but they have other options who can cause Spain problems. Without two of their starters in defense, France and Mbappé could expose a defense made up of two substitutes.
All the focus will be on Mbappé and how he plays with the facemask on. Other sides have been able to contain him. Spain may feel good about their chances of doing the same. But it only takes one faint, one move, for a player like Mbappé to cause damage.
