Crystal Palace are facing French opposition for the very first time. Strasbourg have a mixed record against English clubs, dumped out the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup by Manchester United 60 years ago, before ousting Liverpool from the UEFA Cup in 1997, prevailing 3-0 at home before a 2-0 defeat at Anfield a fortnight later saw them prevail.

Strasbourg vs Crystal Palace preview

Many have suggested that these two teams are the best two in this season's UEFA Conference League, so could this prove to be a dress rehearsal of the final in Leipzig in 181 days time?

In recent seasons, Premier League clubs have cruised through this competition, although Crystal Palace, competing in a major UEFA competition for the first time, have not found life quite as straight forward. After beating Dynamo Kyiv, the Eagles were beaten 1-0 by AEK Larnaca at Selhurst, a shock surely no one saw coming. Nevertheless, Ismaïla Sarr's brace saw them overcome AZ 3-1 in South London last time out, very much getting back on track. Palace's final two league phase opponents are Shelbourne and KuPS, but they can't afford too many more slip ups if they're to finish in the top eight.

Meantime, in the Premier League, Oliver Glasner's team moved up to fifth by beating bottom of the table Wolves 2-0 on Saturday; Daniel Muñoz and Yéremy Pino on target at Molineux. This though is a massive few days, with Manchester United visiting Selhurst on Sunday but, before then, will the Palace faithful have an historic European away win to celebrate in the Alsace?

As for Strasbourg, this is their first foray into a major European group stage for two decades, still yet to taste defeat. Last time out, les Bleu et Blanc overcame BK Häcken 2-1 at the Gamla Ullevi; Julio Enciso and then Martial Godo the scorers in Göteborg. They have also beaten Slovan Bratislava 2-1 at the Národný futbalový štadión, having been held to a 1-1 draw at home by Jagiellonia Białystok in October, traveling to Pittodrie to face Aberdeen in their next match in this competition.

Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, the same people who own Chelsea, Strasbourg have seen an exponential improvement in results, albeit supporters still protest against them at every match, rightly not in favour of their club becoming a feeder club. On the pitch, led by Liam Rosenior, le Racing are fifth in Ligue 1, just eight points behind leaders PSG, who they held to a 3-3 draw in Paris in October. At the Stade de la Meinau, Strasbourg have won five of six Ligue 1 games so far this season, most recently beating Lille 2-0 before the international break, Emmanuel Emegha at the double, albeit they were defeated 1-0 by Lens on Saturday. Here, can les Bleu et Blanc maintain their imperious home record, or will Crystal Palace pick up all three points?

These two clubs have never previously met.

Strasbourg team news

Liam Rosenior regularly switches between a back three and four, but is expected to go with a three here, featuring Ireland international Andrew Omobamidele and Ben Chilwell, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Crystal Palace, collecting an FA Cup winners' medal.

Meantime, goalkeeper Mike Penders, defender Mamadou Sarr and attacker Kendry Páez are all on loan from Chelsea, Mathis Amougou and Diego Moreira both made the move permanently, while former Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso as well as captain Emanuel Emegha are both expected to move to Stamford Bridge next summer.

Strasbourg predicted lineup vs Crystal Palace: (3-4-1-2): Penders; Omobamidele, Sarr, Chilwell; Doué, Rafael Luís, Amougou, Moreira; Lemaréchal, Enciso, Emegha.

Strasbourg player to watch vs Crystal Palace

We've already mentioned him but Emanuel Emegha is this team's talisman, netting six times already this season in just nine appearances, making his senior debut for the Netlerlands last week, so will he scoring spree continue?

Crystal Palace team news

Oliver Glasner was delighted to welcome captain Marc Guéhi back into his starting lineup on Saturday following a foot injury, but he could be rested here, with Jaydee Canvot coming into defence.

Elsewhere, Glasner likes to rotate his midfield in Europe, so Jefferson Lerma and Will Hughes are expected to come in. Further forward, it'll once again be Ismaïla Sarr and Yéremy Pino as the inside-forward, while Eddie Nketiah is an option at centre-forward, having overcome a groin issue.

Crystal Palace predicted lineup vs Strasbourg: (3-4-3): Henderson; Richards, Canvot, Lacroix; Muñoz, Lerma, Hughes, Mitchell; Yéremy, Sarr, Mateta.

Crystal Palace player to watch vs Strasbourg

Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored eight goals so far this season, as well as netting for les Bleus in both Reykjavík and Baku, so can the new France international now shine back in his homeland?

Strasbourg vs Crystal Palace prediction

This Conference League clash will be entertaining and high-quality, and we give the slight edge to Strasbourg, forecasting a home win at la Meinau on Thursday: Strasbourg 2-1 Crystal Palace.
