Sweden are unbeaten in four meetings with Switzerland, the most recent of which came during the 2018 World Cup, a 1-0 victory in the round of 16 in Saint Petersburg. Dating back to 1961, the Swiss have won only three of 14 encounters with the Swedes.

Sweden vs Switzerland preview

These two nations are both major tournament regulars, but who will collect three precious points in the race to be at next summer's World Cup? Well, having missed out on the last two major tournaments, Sweden have endured a nightmare start to this campaign. First, despite leading twice through Premier League duo Anthony Elanga and then Yasin Ayari, a stoppage time equaliser saw the Blågult draw 2-2 with Slovenia at Stadion Stožice.

Three days later, Jon Dahl Tomasson's team were beaten by Group B's supposed minnows Kosovo, leaving Pristina defeated 2-0, putting in a disastrous performance. This century, Sweden had featured at all six European Championships prior to last year's edition, also qualifying for five of the last nine World Cups, but missing out on a place in Qatar, ousted by Poland in a play-off final in Chorzów.

Given the ultra-talented squad at his disposal, head coach Tomasson is under enormous pressure to deliver World Cup qualification. The Blågult's UEFA Nations League promotion means they are all but guaranteed a play-off place, but both this clash, as well as Monday's meeting with Kosovo at Nya Ullevi in Göteborg, are must win if Sweden harbour any hopes of topping this section.

No such concerns for Switzerland who are sitting pretty at the top of Group B, knowing a victory in Stockholm would leave them on the cusp of qualification. Last month could not have gone any better for Murat Yakın's team, demolishing both Kosovo 4-0 and then Slovenia 3-0 at St. Jakob-Park, with Breel Embolo bagging three goals across the two matches in Basel.

The Rossocrociati have featured at each of the last five World Cups, as well as five of the last six Euros, with Euro 2012 the only tournament they've watched from home since 2002. Thus, Switzerland certainly know how to get it done in qualifiers and a victory here, followed by a win over Slovenia in Ljubljana on Monday, would pretty much wrap up first place already. So, will Switzerland be too strong, or can Sweden blow the race for top spot wide open with a win at Nationalarenan?

Sweden team news

Jon Dahl Tomasson is without injured winger Dejan Kuluševski due to a knee injury. However, there will still be plenty of familiar faces to Premier League fans.

In attack, Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, who moved for a combined £185 million this summer, will form a frightening strike partnership. Jon Dahl Tomasson has deployed a 3-5-2 in recent matches, so it'll be interesting to see if he sticks with this shape, following September's poor results.

In goal, after Robin Olsen's sudden retirement, Viktor Johansson of Stoke is expected to be donning the gloves, with Victor Lindelöf, now of Aston Villa, captaining the team in defence.

Sweden predicted lineup vs Switzerland: (4-4-2): Johansson; Holm, Lindelöf, Ekdal, Gudmundsson; Ayari, Salétros, Bergvall, Elanga; Isak, Gyökeres.

Viktor Gyökeres was the top-scorer in last year's UEFA Nations League with nine goals, albeit these came against Slovakia, Estonia and Azerbaijan. He has, in the past, found the net against Belgium and Portugal, so can the Arsenal striker bag a big goal at a big time for his nation?

Switzerland team news

Murat Yakın isn't likely to tinker too much given his team's emphatic victories last month.

Granit Xhaka will win his 140th cap, donning the armband, while three of Dan Ndoye's four international goals have come since June, on target against Mexico, USA and now Slovenia.

Alongside Xhaka, Ricardo Rodríguez, Manuel Akanji and Breel Embolo are the only players likely to feature here who did so against Sweden at the 2018 World Cup at Krestovsky Stadium.

Switzerland predicted lineup vs Sweden: (4-3-3): Kobel; Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodríguez; Xhaka, Freuler, Rieder, Vargas, Ndoye; Embolo.

Worth mentioning Breel Embolo again because, should he find the net in Solna, the striker would've scored in six successive internationals for the very first time, having only found the target in two of 13 appearances beforehand.

Sweden vs Switzerland prediction

We're backing Switzerland to leave Stockholm with at least a draw, one that would leave them clear at the top of the group, and Sweden's hopes hanging by a thread: Sweden 1-1 Switzerland.
