Sweden had been unbeaten in four meetings with Switzerland, prior to their clash in Stockholm last month, with the Rossocrociati thereby targeting back-to-back victories over the Blågult for the first time since 1994.

Switzerland vs Sweden preview

These two teams, fair to say, have enjoyed contrasting fortunes in World Cup qualifying so far. Just 36 days ago, a Granit Xhaka spot-kick followed by a stoppage time clincher from Johan Manzambi saw Switzerland leave Solna 2-0 winners, so will this one at Stade de Genève got the same way?

Well, another victory for Switzerland could see them rubber stamp their spot in North America next summer. Murat Yakın's team began this campaign with three straight victories, demolishing both Kosovo 4-0 and Slovenia 3-0 at St. Jakob-Park in September. Thus, they would have qualified with two games to spare had they won in Ljubljana last time out, but were held to a goalless draw by Slovenia at Stadion Stožice. Nevertheless, three points clear of second-placed Kosovo with a goal difference that is ten superior, the Swiss are very much on the brink.

The Rossocrociati come into this clash unbeaten in eight internationals, defeated only by Spain in Tenerife across their last 11, thereby set to maintain their excellent recent record in qualifiers. Switzerland are poised to qualify for a sixth successive World Cup, last missing one in 2002, despite only featuring at USA '94 during a 40 year barren period prior to this resurgence. So, will it be a night of celebration in Geneva?

Sweden, in complete contrast, have had very little to celebrate in recent times. The Blågult drew their group opener with Slovenia, conceding a stoppage time equaliser in Ljubljana, subsequently losing all three qualifiers, ignominiously beaten twice by Kosovo, defeated 2-0 in Pristina and then 1-0 when the group's supposed minnows visited Göteborg last time out.

As a result, Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked as head coach with Graham Potter appointed manager on a short-term basis, his sole mission to get this side to the World Cup. Luckily, given how bad this team has been in Group B, they are guaranteed a play-off spot via the Nations League, so all eyes will be on next Thursday's draw in Zürich and then the matches themselves in March. So here, can Potter restore some national pride and claim a confidence-boosting victory in Geneva?

Granit Xhaka will win a record-extending 142nd cap, with the equally experienced duo of Manuel Akanji and Ricardo Rodríguez also ever-present fixtures in defence.

Switzerland predicted lineup vs Sweden: (4-3-3): Kobel; Widmer, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodríguez; Xhaka, Aebischer, Sow; Vargas, Ndoye, Embolo.

Switzerland player to watch vs Sweden

Breel Embolo has scored six international goals in 2025 so far, making it his most productive calendar year. Three have come in this qualifying campaign, taking his tally to 22, so another would see him surpass Josef Hügi and Charles Antenen, becoming Switzerland's ninth-highest scorer of all-time.

Sweden team news

Graham Potter is without star player Dejan Kuluševski, Lucas Bergvall and Viktor Gyökeres due to injury, while he takes over an unbalanced squad that is tough to mould into a cohesive unit.

Viktor Johansson of Stoke is set to be donning the gloves, with fellow English-based trio Emil Krafth, Victor Lindelöf and Gabriel Gudmundsson in contention to start as part of his defence.

Benjamin Nygren of Celtic scored twice for his country earlier this year, which could earn him a place alongside Yasin Ayari of Brighton and Newcastle's Anthony Elanga further forward.

Sweden predicted lineup vs Switzerland: (4-3-3): Johansson; Krafth, Starfelt, Lagerbielke, Gudmundsson; Svanberg, Ayari, Nygren; Elanga, Bardghji, Isak.

Sweden player to watch vs Switzerland

Fitting Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak into the same lineup is not a conundrum Potter has to face this month. The latter has scored just once since forcing through a move to Liverpool, but can he add to his tally of 16 for Sweden, most-recently netting against Northern Ireland in March?

Switzerland vs Sweden prediction

Based on everything we've seen from both sides in World Cup qualifying, Switzerland have to be strong favourites at Stade de Genève, thereby cementing their place at next summer's finals, assuming Kosovo drop points in Ljubljana simultaneously: Switzerland 2-0 Sweden.
