Red, White and Green: Seattle Sounders-Chivas USA Match Preview

Author’s note: Red, White and Green is Playing for 90′s newest column aimed at focusing on the Cascadian (Pacific Northwest) teams. In MLS, three teams – Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver – battle for the Cascadia Cup each year. Red, White, and Green will give a critical eye to Cascadia teams. The column is named Red, White, and Green based on the team colors. Red for the Portland Timbers as they are known as “Rose City”, white for the Vancouver Whitecaps as it is their primary color when they play, and lastly green for the Seattle Sounders as they wear “Rave Green” for most matches, home or away.

The Seattle Sounders will be looking to avoid their first three game losing all year when they welcome hapless Chivas USA to CenturyLink Field early Saturday.

More from Editorials

Seattle have slowly watched their once perceived 10 point lead in the Western Conference slip away. After their latest defeat. the Sounders are tied with the Los Angeles Galaxy on points and games played. If the Sounders want to avoid another late season collapse, the must win this match against the Goats.

The Goats sit dead last in the Western Conference with a record of 6-17-6 (win-loss-tie) on 24 points. Chivas has as many losses as the Sounders have wins. This is the third and final meeting of the year between these two clubs and I don’t see this one being pretty at all.

The last time these two teams met each other, the Sounders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after just 16 minutes of action. The Sounders would add two more goals in the final seven minutes before halftime to head to the locker room with a commanding 4-0.

I will give credit where credit is due. The Goats hung in there and didn’t roll over for a vastly more superior team. The Goats got on the board in the 51st minutes and scored their second of the night 9 minutes later to make it more of a contest.

  • With the way that the Sounders have been playing lately, this game may actually be closer that most will believe it to be. Seattle has found the back of the net only twice in their last two league matches. However Chivas has not found the back of the net since they last played the Sounders and have been outscored 7-0 in their last two matches.

One of the two trends has to break. Will the Sounders score more than one time against Chivas?

Will Chivas find the back of the net for the first time since September 3rd?

Let me answer those two questions for you right now. Yes and no.

Prediction: The Sounders will want to show that they are still capable of putting a ton of goals on the board and show that these last two matches were a bit of a fluke. The Sounders will also stiffen up their defense.

    Final score: 3-0 Sounders
