Author’s note: Red, White and Green is Playing for 90′s newest column aimed at focusing on the Cascadian (Pacific Northwest) teams. In MLS, three teams – Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver – battle for the Cascadia Cup each year. Red, White, and Green will give a critical eye to Cascadia teams. The column is named Red, White, and Green based on the team colors. Red for the Portland Timbers as they are known as “Rose City”, white for the Vancouver Whitecaps as it is their primary color when they play, and lastly green for the Seattle Sounders as they wear “Rave Green” for most matches, home or away.

Coming into the match Wednesday night against FC DallasSeattle Sounders center back Zach Scott was sitting on 299 appearances for the Sounders sine joining the team way back on May 4, 2002.  It took him twelve years but on Wednesday night he finally made his 300th appearance for the Sounders.

Twelve years seems like a long time. What were you doing twelve years ago?

I was a year out of high school still trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

Scott made the team after an open tryout and took the field for the first time back in May of 2002 when the Sounders took on the Portland Timbers at PGE Park. He came on as a second half substitute in the 2-0 win. In 35 career matches against the Timbers, Scott has a record of 18-12-5

Later in the month he would make his first career start as a Sounders, when they faced off against the Vancouver Whitecaps and winning 4-1. Also playing 35 matches against Vancouver, Scott has a record of 13-10-12.

Scott’s first goal as a Sounders came back on June 8, 2002  as they took on the Calgary Storm. That goal came in dramatic fashion as it was a 90th minute game-winner.  Not a bad way to score your first goal.

After it was announce that the Sounders would be moving to MLS, Scott was unsure if he would be with the team. He ended up being one of six holdovers from the USL club and made the jump to MLS. Scott started the clubs very first MLS match, which ended in a 3-0 victory over New York Red Bulls.

It would take three years before he would score his first ever MLS goal. The goal came in the 63rd minute of a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on April 14, 2012. Since the team made the jump to MLS, Scott has four goals for the club but only one has come in MLS play.

On September 16, 2014, Scott became one of just four Sounders to lift the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup trophy four times. He joined Brad Evans, Leonardo Gonzalez and Osvaldo Alonso.

I’m sure his 300th appearance would be one that he would like to forget. Scott was injured in the 33rd minute after he came down awkward after going up for a headed. Scott tried to get back into the match but had to be subbed out in the 36th minute in the Sounders eventual 3-1 defeat.

I hope Scott doesn’t miss much time and I like his hard work and dedication that he gives the team at all times. Hears to you Zach, get better and we will see you soon.
