Is Everton manager Roberto Martinez losing it?
Everton manager Roberto Martinez continues to come off poorly in the English press
Roberto Martinez might need a vacation from being the Everton manager. Between his rant regarding last week’s draw versus Chelsea and today’s comments about Sam Byram he’s come off like an absolute jerk in the press as of late.
For a manager who has a reputation for being affable he’s certainly seemed to be quite cantankerous recently. It’s quite possible that the frustration of the Everton season is starting to wear on his nerves.
Last week after his team’s controversial 3-3 draw against Chelsea it was Martinez who seemed like Jose Mourinho when talking to the press. He referred to the refereeing as “diabolical” when it came to his failure to rule John Terry offside for his stoppage time goal. he did everything but accuse the world of having formed a conspiracy against Everton.

While many could understand his frustration given the contentious nature of the Chelsea match it still seemed a bit like Martinez was losing control. That was nothing compared to his comments today about losing out on the transfer race to youngster Sam Byram.
While most in the world of football believe that Byram ultimately chose West Ham over the Toffees, Martinez disagrees. He made a sad attempt at revisionist history by saying that the club “decided the player wasn’t right for us.” It was almost sad to read Martinez’s desperate attempts to explain missing out on Byram.

In fairness to Martinez, he has a right to be frustrated at the season his club have had. They sit in the eleventh spot in the Premier League despite having three world-class stars in Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and John Stones. Fans of the club certainly entered the season with higher expectations.
All three of his best players have also been the subject of intense transfer rumors for most of the season. Those inquiries have only intensified during the current transfer window. Hardly a day passes where their isn’t a fresh rumor about a gigantic bid for one of the Toffee trio.
Ultimately, Martinez is going to need to regain his composure if Everton is going to improve their performance on the pitch. If he is this out of control with his media comments, I can only imagine what he must be like on the training ground. A manager who has lost control isn’t any good to anyone. That’s the state of mind Martinez seems to be in at the moment.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez might need a vacation or perhaps just a well-timed hug. He just needs to find whatever he needs quickly to regain his composure for the sake of his club.
