After the Philadelphia Union’s 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls in the US Open Cup, the Union trolled their MLS rivals perfectly on Twitter.

It was a tale of two halves as the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union battled in the fifth round of the US Open Cup. In the end, the hosts prevailed and defeated the Red Bulls 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals against the New England Revolution in July.

After the win on Wednesday, the Union players, coaches and fans were jubilant. Yet, the Union’s communications staff got the best laugh as they trolled the Red Bulls on Twitter.

The Red Bulls’ struggles in the US Open Cup continued after dominating the competition in the first half and holding the lead at the halftime break. The Union didn’t stop at a Red Bull can car crashing in a soapbox race and added more salt to their rival’s wounds with a tweet than many around the league loved.

Earlier in the day the New York Red Bulls told the Union to delete their account, but the Union one upped them with their response after the game by saying delete your team. The GIF usage also added to the great banter as well and further got their point across.

The Red Bulls played poorly in the second half of the game. Their coach threw a tantrum after not liking how the referee was calling the game. He had hoped his antics would have motivated his team or changed how the ref called the game, but that didn’t happen.

Philadelphia were winners on the field, but they were also the winners of social media on Wednesday as they captured yet another US Open Cup win with Jim Curtin in charge. In the past the Union have made magical runs deep into the US Open Cup in past and added fuel to the fire with their banter with the Red Bulls on Twitter.

Both teams showed social media users how to have a good time on Twitter trolling each other without crossing the line. In the end, the Union won the internet with their “delete your team” tweet after they came from behind to defeat the New York Red Bulls in US Open Cup action and advance to the quarterfinals. They’ll face the New England Revolution on July 20 in Massachusetts.
