Tottenham v Juventus news: Lamela may still start over Son
Tottenham have tough choices to make against Juventus
Most Tottenham fans assume Heung-Min Son’s brace against Huddersfield will get him the start against Juventus. The reality is that Erik Lamela may still pip the Korean in Spurs’ biggest fixture of the season.
There’s little question that Son is the more dangerous offensive threat. When he’s fit and firing, there aren’t many defenders in Europe who can keep him away from goal. His play at Huddersfield was simply sensational. He certainly has every reason to believe he should start against The Old Lady.
Mauricio Pochettino may have different ideas though. While Son is the superior offensive player, his defensive work rate can sometimes leave a lot to be desired. That’s precisely why Lamela has an opportunity to keep him out of the starting XI against Juventus.
For all of the Argentine’s faults, there’s no question that he is the best defensive option Pochettino has at his disposal. His work rate to win the ball back is off the charts. Lamela also gives Tottenham a real edge when he’s involved from the opening whistle.

To be very honest, I don’t think Pochettino can be criticized for starting either player against Juventus. If he gives the starting nod to Son it clearly makes Spurs more dangerous on the attack. Playing a more offensive-minded starting XI at home is a logical move. It stands to reason that Tottenham will be able to dictate more of the match on their (semi) home ground.
On the other hand, starting Lamela would make Pochettino’s lineup much stronger on the defensive end of the pitch. Tottenham head into this fixture knowing that a clean sheet will guarantee them a crucial Champions League victory over Juventus. Even a 1-1 draw would give Spurs what they need to make the next round.
So now the question becomes which way will Pochettino go? I think the odds favour him choosing Son. Leaving him on the bench only to see Juventus grab early momentum with an early goal could be disastrous for Spurs. GIving Son a well-deserved start in such an important match will increase Tottenham’s odds of grabbing the match by the scruff of the neck.

Tottenham’s motto of “To Dare is To Do” will be tested by Pochettino’s starting XI versus Juventus. Clearly, giving the nod to Heung-Min Son over Erik Lamela would be the gaffer’s way of embodying that age-old philosophy.
