3. Persisting with Lucas at striker

Harry Kane‘s injury has forced Mourinho to scramble for replacements at the No. 9 spot in his formation. Most of the time, Lucas Moura has been the player charged with the unenviable task of filling in for the world-class striker.

Quite simply, Lucas doesn’t possess the characteristics to play the position effectively in Mourinho’s system. He’s far too short to be any kind of credible threat as a target man. The Brazilian does possess amazing leaping ability, but that doesn’t overcome his lack of stature and size.

Admittedly, none of the other options at Mourinho’s disposal are great. Heung-Min Son is bigger than Lucas but he’s better suited to playing in wide areas. He’s totally incapable of holding up play with his back to goal.

The one option Mourinho should consider is giving Troy Parrott an opportunity to showcase his talents in Premier League action. Throwing a 17-year-old into that situation is a bit unfair, but Mourinho should at least give him a few minutes off the bench to see if he can rise to the occasion.

The point here is that Lucas cannot be trotted out every week as the starting striker in Kane’s absence. He might score an odd goal or two, but he can’t do the rest of what’s required from the position.
