Thomas Meunier

Much like each team’s pursuit of Sandro Tonali, Inter Milan will be joining Juventus in the search for a starting right back this summer. However, this position should be one they try to fill without fighting Juve for their guy. I picked out Hans Hateboer as the player Juve should sign this summer and could absolutely see Inter making a play for him too, but I believe the player they should target is Thomas Meunier.

I honestly don’t understand why PSG opted not to extend Meunier’s contract. He was their clear first choice at right-back last season and performed well in the role. They also don’t exactly have somebody who’s ready to take over for him. It seems like a major oversight unless they have a signing lined up. Inter should be the squad to take advantage of this oversight.

Inter has options at right-back currently, but none of them is the most impressive option. Antonio Candreva is ageing and should be sold. Danilo D’Ambrosio has been solid for Inter during his time there but is going to be 32 in September and only managed to make 12 starts this season.

Inter has the option to buy Victor Moses, but he isn’t the most awe-inspiring option as a starting right back. They could also have Valentino Lazaro back, but Newcastle has an option to buy him and he hasn’t really proven himself worthy of regular starts yet.

On the other hand, Meunier has proven that he can be a starter for a real contender with PSG and in the last World Cup and Euro with Belgium. He would provide Inter with a solid two-way player on the right side and would already have built some rapport with the only striker we know will be in their starting lineup when the season starts.

Meunier wouldn’t be the kind of noteworthy signing that Inter spent all of last summer making, but he would improve the squad and perhaps be enough to push them over the top in their pursuit of a Scudetto.
