Sporting Lisbon became champions of Portugal for the 20th time after second-place Benfica lost 2-0 in Famalicao on Sunday. Sporting had defeated Portimonense 3-0 on Saturday.
Coach Ruben Amorim's Sporting secured the 2024 Primeira Liga championship with two matches left. It is the 39-year-old Amorim's second Portuguese championship of his career.
Leaders with 84 points
In the final game of Matchday 32, Famalicao defeated Benfica 2-0 at home with goals from Jose Rodriguez in the 71st minute and Zaydou Youssouf in the 85th minute and with that Benfica, the 2022-2023 champions, remained 8 points behind first-place Sporting with only 6 points remaining.
Sporting sit top of the league table with 84 points from 32 matches. Benfica are in second with 76 points.
Another significance of this championship for fans is that it is only Sporting's third championship in the 21st century, following titles in 2001-02 and 2020-21. Founded in 1906, the club's other 17 championships were all won in the 20th century.
The Green-and-Whites will face Porto in the Portuguese Cup final on May 26 in their pursuit of a double.
Post-match feelings on Saturday
"We were very competent and serious," coach Amorim said in his post-match press conference. "We barely let Portimonense SC reach our goal and we did not commit many fouls in the offensive midfield, which was one of the ideas for the game, because the opposition have scored a lot of goals from set pieces and are very strong from them."
The coach also reserved special praise for Paulinho, who was named Man of the Match for his goal and assist. "Today Paulinho gave what he always gives, but he added goals. It is his best season at Sporting CP in that aspect, but he always offered us a lot because of the way he works. In difficult moments, I highlighted what he gave to the team. He is a very important player for us, and it is always a pleasure to be his coach."
